Obituary

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Vavó and Bisavó, Alzira da Conceição Brum Castelo da Costa. She passed away peacefully, at the age of 88, at the O'Neill Centre in Toronto, on January 14, 2021. Alzira was born on December 26, 1932, in Lagoa (Rosário), S. Miguel, Azores. Survived by her three beloved sons, Armando Jorge (Helena), José (Joe) Carlos (Liz) and John (Shannon), and her grandchildren, Christopher, Alyssia (Rahim), Ashley, Brandon, Katherine and Victoria and her great-grandson, Lucas. Alzira was the loving wife of João Luis da Costa (deceased April 9, 2005) and the surviving daughter of José da Costa Castelo and Maria de Lurdes Brum Castelo. Alzira survived her 5 siblings, Maria Ermelinda Castelo, João Castelo, José Castelo, Margarida Castelo and Alda Maria Castelo. Alzira immigrated to Toronto, Canada, from S. Miguel, Azores (Portugal) in 1963 to join her husband João Luis da Costa. She brought with her, her eldest son Armando Jorge. Both of her younger sons were born in Toronto. Alzira was a home maker, who loved to cook, sew and was an avid reader. Most of all, she loved her family unconditionally and instilled in her sons strong values that have served them well and nothing brought her more happiness than spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was a devout Catholic, attending mass at Holy Cross Catholic Church (Igreja de Santa Cruz) in Toronto. She will be dearly missed and is forever in our hearts.
Due to the current pandemic restrictions and under direction from our regulator, the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, effective November 23, 2020 all funerals and visitations will be by invitation only to limit the number of people in attendance and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Thank you for your understanding. Online condolences can be left by clicking on Memorial Book.
