Obituary

Eurico Machado Bettencourt, a cherished godfather, uncle, cousin and friend passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Thursday, May 8, 2025, in Toronto, Ontario. Eurico was born in Graciosa, Acores, in 1935 and immigrated to Canada in 1969 with his sister Berta, her husband Francisco and their children Maria, Ana and Rui. While he was never married and did not have children, Eurico was a devoted brother and brother-in-law to Berta and Francisco, living together with them, and taking on the role of a parent, grandparent and great-grandparent to their children and their children’s children. Eurico enjoyed lively conversations and was always up-to-date on the latest news. As the family historian, he kept the family connected with stories from the past and present about relatives near and far. Family and friends will miss hearing Eurico reminisce about his proudest moments including his days as a school boy in Graciosa at the top of his class, the time he spent as an army reservist where his attention to detail earned him a special position as the commander’s assistant, his move to Canada where as a valued factory-worker he earned the trust of his employer and became a supervisor, and the time he put his own life on hold to dutifully care for his parents Juvina Machado and Manuel Bettencourt at the end of their lives. In addition to proud personal moments, Eurico took great pride in the accomplishments of his nieces and nephews, and was always there to celebrate, congratulate and encourage them to continue striving for bigger and better things. Family and friends will remember that Eurico was always there to accompany them during important moments, the great times spent together at the Graciosa Community Centre of Toronto and at St. Christopher House, and the hours spent playing cards or having coffee together. Eurico will be remembered by all whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace, surrounded by loved ones, until we meet again.
