Obituary
With heavy hearts, we announce that Abel Macedo passed away peacefully on January 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Abel was born on May 17, 1928, in Povoação, São Miguel, Azores. In search of a better life for himself and his family, he immigrated to Canada on April 1, 1956. Through courage, sacrifice, and unwavering determination, Abel built a life rooted in hard work, generosity, and deep devotion to family.
He was later joined by his beloved wife, Normania (predeceased 1998), and their two older children, Jose (Magdalena) and Maria (Manuel, predeceased). Together, Abel and Normania opened not only their home but their hearts—sponsoring many family members and friends, providing room and board, helping them find work, and guiding them as they began new lives in Canada.
Their family grew to six children with the addition of Antonio (Margaret), Margarida (Carlos), Abel (Nancy), and Susy (Carlo). Abel was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a steady presence whose strength and kindness shaped generations.
He will be deeply missed by his cherished grandchildren Darci (Steve), Lizzie (Victor), Nelson, Craig (Laurie), Tammy (Darren), Danny (Sadie), Tommy (Cheryl), Christopher (Kelly), Julia, Chelsea (James), Kyle (Erin), Brittany (Rui), and Dylan, as well as his treasured great-grandchildren Savanah, Matias, Abel Antonio, Eric, Adam, Colin, Evan, Kathryn, Samuel, Mikayla, Katrina, Zoey, Christopher, Madison, Dakotah, and Isla.
Abel was deeply devoted to his faith and found peace and joy in tending his garden, nurturing life with the same patience and love he gave to his family. His legacy of generosity, humility, and resilience will forever remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and palliative care team at St. Michael’s Hospital for their compassion and exceptional care during Abel’s final days.
Abel will be forever remembered for his quiet strength, open heart, and unwavering love for his family.
In lieu of flower donation please consider a donation to St. Michaels Hospital or Canadian Mental Health Associations.
