Obituary

Terry Medwedyk passed away at Credit Valley Hospital on Saturday, January 24, 2026. He is now reunited with his dearly departed mother Stefania, father Nicholas and sister Vera. He will be profoundly missed by his brother Jerry (Marg), his brother-in-law Borys,  his nieces and nephews – Natalia and Markian, with whom he was very close, Mike (Christine) and Jim (Shawna), as well as his great-nieces and great-nephews Kilyan, Raiden, Jade, Dustyn, Alannah and Joshua, and his many cousins and friends.

Terry was a gentle and caring man who was always happy to help others. He enjoyed music, film, long meaningful conversations, good food (especially on patios) and cherished time spent with family and friends. He was fiercely devoted to those he loved and deeply passionate about his work.

Although modest about his career success, Terry was one of the most talented acousticians and studio designers in the world. In 1983, he founded and became director of Group One Acoustics Inc., specializing in architectural acoustics and focused on facility design for music recording studios and the post-audio and film industry. In the 1990s, his work expanded to include theatres, churches and home cinemas.

Terry acoustically engineered some of Canada’s most prestigious and beautiful recording studios and spaces, worked with impressive clients globally and guest-lectured at many schools. Significant local projects included: Noble Street Studios (which won a 2013 Toronto Urban Design Award of Excellence), Phase One Studios, Technicolor Sound Post Inc, Kuhl Muzik, Lacquer Channel Mastering, Alpine Mastering, Metalworks Institute's campus studios, Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Stratford Festival, CBC, Bell Media, Corus Entertainment, University of Toronto, Humber College and Sheridan College.

Known as much for his kindness as for his expertise, Terry leaves an extraordinary professional and personal legacy.

As an electrical contractor, we had the pleasure of working with Terry on numerous studio projects over the years. From the first to the last, he will fondly be remembered as “The Mighty Acoustron”. He will be sadly missed. Our condolences to his family and many friends.

Taras was a very dear family friend. He was kind and humble, and always had time to lend a hand or share a funny moment. Taras was up for playing tennis, cycling, walking, visiting at the cottage or just getting together to catch up. We will miss you dear friend. May you rest in peace. Our deepest condolences to all the family.

We are deeply saddened to hear of Taras' passing. He was a great person, fantastic uncle and friend to many. He will be missed by family, friends and the Ukrainian community. He shared many dinners and occasions with our family. May he rest in peace, reunited with his parents and dear sister.

Togetherness Reflection Death is nothing at all - I have only slipped away into the next room. Whatever we were to each other we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always did. Laugh as we always laughed together. Play, smile, think of me. Let my name be the household word it always was. Let it be spoken without effort. Why should I be out of your mind because I'm out of your sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval around the corner. All is well. Nothing is lost. Remember, some day, all will be as it was before, only better; infinitely happier when we are all together again. You cannot see beyond the grief right now, but this I know; I loved you so. 'Twas heaven here with you.

My sincere condolescences to all of Terry's loved ones. I will dearly miss you my friend; can't believe it's been 18+ years, but not nearly enough patio get togethers. I'll miss your gentle, sweet spirit and especially your smile and laugh. May the angels hold you in the palm of their hands now, in comfort.

My heartfelt condolences to Terry's family, friends, and colleagues. I was fortunate to spend time with him on a number of professional and social occasions. He also provided me with some very helpful tips when I was in the planning stage for acoustic treatments for my current studio. His knowledge and decades experience designing or fixing the acoustics in professional recording rooms resulted in some of the best rooms ever built. Rest in peace Terry and thank you for sharing your wisdom, energy, and expertise with us.

Terry was a gifted man who helped create so many beautiful and great sounding spaces. But most of all, was a wonderful, kind, honest, and caring person. May he rest in peace and his memory be a blessing to you.

One of life’s joys is when a professional colleague becomes a friend. Terry was best at both. We came from two different corners of the acoustical world but shared so much in common. Including a deep mutual respect. I’m not sure if we ever actually worked together but we often tried to help each other out, sending each other work or rumours of possible new projects. I shall never forget our backyard BBQs and conversations that could go on forever – solving all the world’s acoustical problems! Terry lived a good life because he was a good man. Rest in peace my friend. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

I once contacted Terry to ask for advice. I was building my first Mix/Mastering room in a very small basement room. His advice on the phone was "don't do it". But then the next day he sent me 20 pages of hand written drawings and notes on how to best treat the room. He never asked for a penny in return. Year's before that exchange Terry was hired by CBC Toronto to "fix" the acoustics in our recording studio control rooms. He did more than fix them he made them perfect. What a lovely man. He will be greatly missed.
