Obituary

Vitor Amaro Pereira Dias passed away peacefully at home after prolonged illness, surrounded by his children, wife and son-in-law.

Born on the first of February, 1943, in Almada, Portugal, to Eduardo Dias and Eufrásia Augusta Pereira, Vitor was a free spirit who grew up swimming and sailing the Tagus river. Known for his love of soccer, Vitor was the captain of his hometown Junior soccer team and piqued the interest of Sporting Club of Portugal, opting instead for the wide-open seas. After completion of his military training in the Navy, Vitor joined the merchant marines, and later, worked in cruise lines in Northern Europe where he lived several adventures - and a few misadventures as well. Meanwhile, between serving in the Navy and sailing off again, he married the love of his life, Maria Odete. They raised three children: Nuno, José, and Paula.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, Vitor was passionate, loud, boisterous and quick to laugh, dedicating his life to providing and caring for the family as well as helping all in need. Alongside his family, he also had a passion for classic film and classical music, while also occasionally enjoying singing his favourite ballads, which he did quite well. Eventually Canada beckoned, and he followed the steps of his father, Eduardo, preparing life in Canada for his family who later joined him in 1979.

Primarily a man of the trades, Vitor was a hard worker who held many jobs - at times literally working day and night.

Vitor is survived by his wife, Maria Odete, and children, Nuno, José and Paula [João], as well as grandchildren, Sara, Kevin, André, Carlos and Izabella, and his brother, Ernesto. He was preceded in death by his parents.
