Obituary

The world became less bright on the morning of September 16, 2025 with the passing of José Moises Bernardo. Survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Maria de Fátima Bernardo. Beloved father of Lucy and Israel. Dear father in law of Paul and Amy and loving grandfather of Kennedy and Braden. Born October 29, 1946 in Lomba Da Maia, Açores, Moises immigrated to Canada with his pregnant wife and 2 year old daughter. Did not speak a word of English and yet managed to make a life for his family, who never went without. He was a larger than life person with a boisterous loud voice that everyone recognized. Somehow he knew everyone and considered every person he met his friend. He was the neighbourhood celebrity. He possessed a great sense of humor and made you laugh just with the things he said and did. He had a great love for his extended family and friends and enjoyed spending time with all of them. Moises had a very kind heart and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Despite all the challenges and suffering he endured, he never wavered in his courage, strength, perseverance and positive attitude. He was a warrior who fought the good fight up until his last moments. We are grateful for your love, friendship and will cherish the memories you have gifted us. You will be dearly missed.

I knew Mr.Bernardo for about two years, as a healthcare provider. He was exactly as described by his family in the obituary - everyone knew when Mr.Bernardo was around because it was impossible not to hear him! He always went around sharing little candies with everyone. It was always nice to chat with him - he was proud to speak of his children and grandkids, wearing the jacket his son had gotten him from work and everything. I'm very happy to have met him, and I hope he was surrounded by his loved ones towards the end. I wish his family the best during this tough time, and I'm glad he is no longer suffering.

Oh Lucy and Izzy, my heart breaks for both of you and your dear mom on the passing of your dad. I’ll never forget the days I would run into him on Dundas he would share his stories. He was so full of life and had me in stitches every time with his hilarious tales. I’ll forever cherish those unexpected conversations and bursts of laughter whenever I ran into him. May your daddy rest in paradise. Thinking of you all during this incredibly difficult time and sending you the biggest squeeze.

Lisa Sousa and my father, Manuel de Sousa
To the family of Sr. Moises, my sincere condolences. I met Sr. Moises at Hemodialysis where he was my father’s buddy. Man he never failed to disappoint in putting a smile on my face and some candies in my hand!!! His presence was big and loud and I looked forward to chatting with him when I’d drop off my father for his treatment. I’m so sad. I will miss his war stories, he knew my uncle Max, they were in the same platoon together. I hope they’re getting caught up in heaven. Sending the family a big hug.
