Obituary
Maria De Simas Silveira was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother sister and friend. After a brief illness, she passed away at Toronto Western Hospital on Wednesday, December 4th, 2025, at the age of 97.
Together with her seven children and late husband Artur, she immigrated to Canada in 1970, from the island of Pico, in the Açores.
Maria loved to tell jokes, laugh, sing, and most especially make quilts (trabalhos loucos). She spent countless hours quilting in her very untidy basement, while singing or whistling. Over the years she made numerous quilts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved cooking, and well into her 80s would prepare great meals for family gatherings at Christmas time.
She was a proud mother to Raquel, Regina, Rogério, Rui, Judite, Artur and Helena. She loved her grandchildren: Christopher, Jennifer, Claudia, Sean, Adam, Nathan, Lukas, Matthew, Andrea, Catrina, Sabrina, Jesse, Lara, Daniel, Andrew, and Holly. She was also extremely fond of her great-grandchildren, whose pictures she would often kiss: Ben, Charlotte, Naveed, Holden, Logyn, Rosie, Carlos, Aidan, Ariana, Lucian, Sebastian, Luna, Wren, Finlay, Diogo, and Max.
Maria will be honored with a service at St. Mary’s Catholic church (at Bathurst and Adelaide in Toronto) on Monday, December 8th at 9:45am.
Visiting hours are from 4 – 8 pm on Sunday December 7th.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to UHN (University Health Network)
