Obituary

Mary Kaw Shee Wu -Young Tai aka Kaw Shiu Kin August 14, 1930 – November 19, 2025

Mary Wu Young Tai passed away peacefully on November 19, 2025 at 95 years old. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George and her son Kin Min, Albert. She is survived by her children Kin Man (Seeta), Kin Fong (Foster), Kin Fan (Paul), Kin Pound (Ami), loved by grandchildren Shan Mei, Kaniska (Becca), Siu Fan, Ge-Hung (Winnie), Wei Ge, and sadly missed by great grandchildren Sanaa, Shiloh, Maggie, Ada and Nia.

Born on August 14, 1930, in Sekei, China, Mary aka Kaw Shiu Kin was the third of four siblings. At the age of 19, she embarked on a life-changing journey to Trinidad, where she married George Wu Young Tai through an arranged marriage. Together they built a life rooted in hard work, resilience, and devotion. In Trinidad they raised five children while managing the family grocery and bar, with Mary balancing the demands of business, household, and caregiving with extraordinary strength and grace.

In 1972, George immigrated to Canada, beginning a new chapter filled with hope and challenge. Then Mary and the two younger brothers followed in 1976. After George’s passing in 1980, Mary faced life as a widow while still running a household. With determination and courage, she entered the workforce, attended evening classes, learned to drive, and took on full responsibility for supporting her household. Her perseverance and independence became an enduring inspiration.

Mary was known for her generosity and instinctive care for others. She opened her home to relatives recovering from illness and cared for friends’ children during times of hardship. She was recognized for her warm smile, welcoming presence, and deep interest in people.

She approached everything in life with intensity and creativity, especially her love of mahjong, where her sharp mind and spirited competitiveness were legendary. A skilled cook, she turned simple ingredients into nourishing meals that sustained her family through difficult times.

In later years, she continued to help others. While attending senior day programs at Mon Sheong, pre-Covid, and Care First post-Covid, she would be found assisting fellow seniors by pushing their wheelchairs. Her greatest joy came from her growing family, greeting her great-grandchildren with delight and pride, raising both hands in the air and cheering “5-5-5!” five children, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

The family want to thank all the persons who helped care for her in her later years: Cherry, Sarah, Alison, Auntie Mila and the personal support workers especially Stanley for their loving care. Her legacy is one of resilience, courage, and enduring love. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Rest in peace, Mama. We will carry your strength and spirit with us always

She was selfless , kind-hearted, generous and a successful business woman among other things and not forgetting her culinary skills of course. She has departed this world but her memories will live forever in our hearts. Please accept our deepest condolences and find comfort in knowing that she will rest in the Peace of Christ.

May Mary rest in peace with much joy in the next life after having brought so much of it during her time here. Although our times in Trinidad only crossed when I was a little child, she will always be Cai Ma to me and the entire Luk/Look families. Hoping the Yung Tai family find solace in the long and fulfilling life Mary led despite the sadness of this loss.

We remember Biu Ku with great affection going back 80+ years from Trinidad, West Indies. Many were the times she took myself and my sister Moy home after school from San Fernando. She never refused any children who lived on her way home. The car was always packed with her own children and many others. We spent holidays at each other's homes, memories that are priceless. Her cooking skills were exceptionally good. Her kindness God given. May Biu Ku have that Peace that she richly deserves for a lifetime of Love, Devotion, and Service. Her loss is immensely poignant. Condolences from Michael Lau & Family, Irene Lau-Gomez and other children of Charlie Tim Lau and Choy Man See Tim Lau.
