Obituary

With all the love of family we mourn the passing of Allister Shaw, who passed away peacefully in his sleep of a heart arrhythmia in the morning of February 3rd, 2024 at age 61. After triumphing in a battle with cancer, and a lifetime of caring for his family, our fighter and survivor was finally allowed to have his final rest. He now joins his father Hiram Shaw.

Allister lives on in the memory of those lives which he touched, especially those of his wife Giao, and his five children Joshua, Nicholas, Kaylan, Eric, and Allyssa. All of which carry forth his legacy in their personalities, values, and character. He is additionally loved by his mother Florence, his brother Victor, his sister Eileen, and his nieces and nephews.

Allister was a protector, a provider, a source of counsel, and a well of love for his family and friends. He was an advocate for himself and his family, and a loving spouse and father. He was spiritual and introspective, offering his guidance and encouraging self-love and discovery. He enjoyed being active, the outdoors, martial arts, documentaries and learning, fantasy novels, rock music, and good food. He was a problem solver, the type of person who would figure out how to do anything in front of him.

Allister grew up a proud caper in Margaree Forks, Nova Scotia, spending his time outdoors and working the land at his father’s saw mill or the farmland of his uncles. In highschool he was a star player on one of the best high school basketball teams in the maritimes. In his early 20s he moved to Toronto to pursue education and his career; meeting Giao while he lived there. Affectionately called “Top Gun” by Giao’s neighbors due to his signature aviators and leather jacket, he would eventually start a family with her. He worked as a machine technician for most of his career until he retired at age 60. Though his retirement was brief, he made the most of it by spending time with his wife and kids.

Allister’s greatest wish in life was that he would have a strong family unit who would come together in the most difficult times. We take comfort in that he is watching over us, smiling at how he has succeeded. Rest in peace, we love you, and you will never be forgotten.

Dear Giao and family , my sincerest condolences on Allister's passing . He and I spent a lot of time together in the early 80's . My house was walking distance from his. We lifted weights , cruised Margaree and had some great conversations. I really wish that I had had the opportunity to catch up with him. He was a good friend and I will miss him. I wish you peace and healing in the weeks and months ahead.
