Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and nonna, Apollonia Scolieri on April 6,  2024, in her 84th year.  She passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Apollonia is predeceased by her husband Rocco Antonino, her sisters, and best friends in life,  Rosa (Francesco) and Anna (Rocco).  She leaves behind her loving and supportive sister Giuseppina.

She will be loved and missed beyond measure by her daughters Rosa (Dan), Nancy (Salvatore), Ninetta (John), her adoring grandchildren Martina, Daniel, Simona, Madeleine, Julia, Adam, our angel in heaven, Victoria, and the many nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.

Apollonia was born in Maierato, Calabria,  Italy on October 14, 1939, and immigrated to Canada in 1963.  She settled in Toronto’s Little Italy neighbourhood, where she built a new life for herself and remained there until her passing. She worked for over 25 years at Toronto General Hospital in the housekeeping department where she took pride in her work and was known for her compassion and tender heart.  More than just her work, her faith was an important part of her life, and she enjoyed her church community from which many friendships developed.

Widowed at a young age, her greatest accomplishment was raising her three daughters through sacrifice, hard work, and by the grace of God.  Her daughters and the families they created were the joy of her life.  She was their pillar of strength and their guiding light.  She was happiest gathering her family around the kitchen table, often reminiscing about growing up in Maierato and her immigrant experiences, recounting stories with remarkable detail.  She took a great deal of pride in her vegetable and flower gardens.  She enjoyed maintaining the cooking and baking traditions she grew up with, and she especially enjoyed sharing these traditions with her grandchildren.

She was forever grateful to her mother and sisters, who were her rock and who provided unwavering support  throughout her life, especially during the most difficult times.

We are heartbroken by our loss but grateful for the many life lessons she left us.  Her legacy of love, quiet strength, generosity, and humility lives on in her children and grandchildren.  She will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

To celebrate Apollonia’s life and legacy, visitations will be held at Cardinal Funeral Home Bathurst Chapel (366 Bathurst Street) on Wednesday April 10, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 72 Mansfield Avenue on Thursday April 11, 2024,  at 9:00 a.m. Those not able to attend in person may join the funeral mass virtually through the church YouTube or Facebook page: https://www.youtube.com/@SFAPToronto or https://www.facebook.com/SFAPToronto

We are so sorry for your loss and are thinking of you at this difficult time. Sending hugs to the family. I have warm memories of your mom making me lunch when Nancy and I were residents together all those years ago as she was concerned my new bride would not feed me well enough. She was a very special lady and such a caregiver.
