Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Januaria Pacheco da Costa Rebelo on April 29, 2023.  Januaria was born on December 8, 1939 to the late Maria Amelia Pacheco and Manuel da Costa Casinha in Porto Formoso , São Miguel, Açores. Januaria had a busy and fruitful life on the family farm making chouriço, cooking, and assisting her sister in dressmaking.  In 1957 she married the love of her life, Dimas da Silva Rebelo, who predeceased her on January 1, 2007 after almost 50 years of marriage.  She followed him to Toronto, Canada in 1966 to begin an exciting new life.  She devoted her life to her husband, daughters and later to her beloved grandson. Januaria was a warm and generous person who loved all her family and friends.  Her greatest joy was hosting family and friends for delicious meals and traditional dishes from back home. Januaria loved gardening, crocheting blankets for all the babies in the family, and later meeting her friends at the seniors' centre.  She was a devout Catholic whose faith in God was steadfast. She was an active member of Santa Cruz Catholic Church. Januaria is predeceased by her brothers Manuel and Laudalino and by her sister Amelia. She will be deeply missed by her three daughters and "sons", Maria (Rufus), Anna, Amelia(Steve), and her cherished grandson, Patrick.    She will be greatly missed by her brother João,  her sisters-in-law Noemia, Odete, Maria da Graça, Leonilde and Adelaide, her nieces and nephews, and many friends. We are deeply grateful to the caring and compassionate staff at the Princess Margaret Hospital and the Toronto Western Hospital. Memorial contributions may be made to The Hospital for Sick Children.

Folks, At the end of every well-lived life is an unknown peace where suffering and pain are no longer felt. I hope you find some comfort in that, and cling to good memories of your mom and the times that you all had together. Mine are of her generosity and sincere desire to make sure we were having a good time there many years (decades) ago.

We have treasured memories of visinha Januaria who was our neighbor for many years in Little Portugal. She was warm, generous and was always thinking of others. She particularly loved children and provided child care in her home. She loved to cook, bake, crochet and was an avid gardener. She was also a great storyteller and loved to spin a good yarn with her playful sense of humor. Her beautiful soul and friendship will be sadly missed. May the memories continue to nurture and sustain Maria, Anna, Amelia, their husbands and grandson Patrick as well as extended family and friends during this time of great loss.

Senhora Januaria was one of the sweetest, loving ladies that I had the pleasure of growing up with as our across the street neighbour. As a child I spent most of my days at her home playing with Anna and Amelia. She would always joke that I was like her 4th daughter. After I got married and moved away she was always a constant presence in the neighbourhood. I will always have fond memories of her, she will be dearly missed. Sending love and hugs to Maria, Anna ,Amelia and the rest of the family. Rest in peace Senhora Januaria🥰❤️

I will miss my dear sister-in-law, Januaria. I have fond memories of times we spent together when she and Dimas visited California, and when Laudalino and I would go to Toronto. Januaria and I shared crochet patterns and recipes over the years. I think of her, and will continue to think of her, every time I bake almond flour cookies at Christmas time with her recipe. They are a favorite with family and friends here. I will miss our talks about our families on the phone. May God grant Januaria eternal rest and peace. Sending love and prayers to my nieces, Maria, Anna, and Amelia, and to Rufus, Patrick, and Steve.

I am saddened by the passing of my Madrinha Januaria. She was always so kind and thoughtful, and was always so welcoming when my family would visit her family in Toronto. She would prepare the most wonderful food and desserts for us to enjoy, and she and my father would reminisce and tell stories about growing up in Sao Miguel. I will remember her smile and cheerful voice, and will miss hearing her say “beijinhos” at the end of our phone calls. My condolences to my cousins Maria, Anna, and Amelia, and to Rufus, Patrick, and Steve.
