Obituary

It is with sadness that the family of Karolina Maleckyj announces her death on February 19th at the Ivan Franko Home in Mississauga. Her long and full life was a testament to resilience and adaptability in the face of upheaval from her native Ukraine during the Second World War and the subsequent relocation to Austria, Argentina and finally Canada in 1957.

Notwithstanding all the displacement and challenges of new countries, cultures and languages, she and her late husband, Dr. Myroslaw Maleckyj, who predeceased her in 2005, raised a family and remained consistently active in the local and international Ukrainian community. Her legacy of teaching at the St. Nicholas Ukrainian School will long be remembered by generations of students who studied under her strong tutelage.

She leaves her children, Darka Griffin (Tim), Christina Fedorowycz (Roman), Lida and Andrij (Motria Kuzycz); seven grandchildren, Marko (Tania), Adrian (Taya), Nicholas, Kyra, Tanya, Andreika and Danylo as well as five great grandchildren, Amelia, Anton, Mabel, Petra and Tomas.

They, and all the extended family, recognize how well she carried herself with grace and refinement no matter what the circumstance. She truly set a standard, especially when it came to the quality and style of family gatherings.

The Maleckyj family would be pleased to receive visitors at the Cardinal Funeral Home, 92 Annette Street, Toronto, on Wednesday, February 23rd from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 24th at 11:15  a.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 4 Bellwoods Avenue, Toronto. Interment will follow at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Cemetery, 1280 Dundas St. W., Oakville.

In lieu of flowers please feel free to make a donation to the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation.

I extend my deepest sympathies to the Maleckyj family. May the soul of Karolina be at peace with our Heavenly Father. I had the honour to be one of her students at St. Nicholas Ukrainian School in the 1960’s. She was truly a blessing in my life, and I will always remember her. She was a fine woman and an excellent educator. May God give him eternal rest.

My sincere condolences to Darka, Christina, Lida, Andrij and your entire family. It doesn't matter at what age and under what circumstances one loses a parent, it is always difficult. Although in recent years her health prevented her active participation in the Ukrainian community, her contribution was immense. She was a keystone of our community. She will be missed. Her passing saddens us all. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Вічная Пам’ять. Vichnaya Pamyat. May Her Memory Be Eternal.

Our deepest condolences to her family. As one of her учні from рідна школа in the 60s, I always loved how she wore her up in a bun and was so sad when she cut it. She was a wonderful and fair teacher.

Tetiana Dzulynsky
