Obituary
LARISSA (ARTEMIUK) PAWLENKOPeacefully after a long illness, at Trillium Hospital, Mississauga, on the morning of December 10th, 2007. Beloved wife of Victor Pawlenko, loving mother of Lydia Pawlenko-Lobos and Natalie Pavlenko Lomaga. Dear mother-in-law of Henry Lobos and Ihor George Lomaga. Cherished grandmother of Emilia and Julian Lomaga. She will be sadly missed by her cousin Halyna Bilyk, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Olga and Nestor Mychalczuk and their caring families. The memory of her dear sister, Anna Palijenko, who died in November 2005, is still fresh in our hearts and we are gladdened by the thought of them together again, as is her nephew Peter Palijenko. Born in Berest, Ukraine in 1930, Larissa and her family suffered through the horrific turmoil of WWII with both Nazi and Soviet army occupations. At the tender age of nine, Larissa lost her mother, Taissa. Her oldest sister, Nina, perished during the war. Together with her sister Anna, Larissa arrived in Canada in 1948. Their father, Bishop Platon (Artemiuk) joined them in Canada in 1951, but died shortly after. Together with her husband Victor, Larissa created a wonderful life for her family. Despite her failing health, she conscientiously worked in her career with the Ukrainian Credit Union, as a teacher at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian School and as a volunteer for many organizations. Larissa shared her love of music and literature with her daughters and will always be remembered as a very caring and loving soul. Visitation Thursday evening 7-9 p.m. with a Panachida Service at 7:30 p.m. at Cardinal Funeral Home, 366 Bathurst St. (north of Dundas), Toronto. Funeral service at St. Volodymyr Cathedral, 400 Bathurst Street on Friday at 10 a.m. Interment at St. Volodymyr Cemetery in Oakville. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to HELP US HELP THE CHILDREN, a project of the Children of Chornobyl Canadian Fund (2118A Bloor St. W., Toronto, Ontario, M6S 1M8; 416-604-4611). Larissa's life is reflective of her favourite poet, Lesya Ukrainka, who always stressed the need to turn hardship into victory, pain into joy, and the impossible into the possible.
"Yes, I will laugh despite my tears, I'll sing out songs amidst my misfortunes; I'll have hope despite all odds, I will live! Away, you sorrowful thoughts!''
