Obituary
Maria da Conceição Vicente passed away peacefully surrounded by her two daughters on September 20, 2024 at 85 years old.
She now joins in heaven her late husband Honorato Vicente whom she knew all her life and has missed deeply for eleven years. From talking through windows to moving to Canada, they are reunited together again.
She also rejoins her parents, Teresa Costa Furtado and Jose Pedro Medeiros, and her brothers, Manuel, Jose, and Gilberto in heaven. Her sister, Teresa, will keep her forever in her heart in Portugal.
She will live on through her two daughters, Connie (Tom) Leite and Manuela (Mike) Custodio, who spent every day thankful their mom was their best friend. Connie will think of her mom every time she cooks for someone, and Manuela will feel her presence every time she makes someone laugh.
Her five grandchildren, Matthew, Joshua, Amanda, Stephanie, and Michael will remember her for her strength, her humour, her cooking, and her five dollar bills (sometimes twenty if you brought her a treat).
Conceição left an impact on everyone she knew from her nieces and nephews who saw her as a hero, to her neighbours who looked forward to chatting with her on her front porch, to her best friends that she remained in contact with throughout her life.
She loved to drive to Tim Horton’s every day at 6am for a coffee and a honey cruller (or a cheese croissant depending on her mood), celebrate every holiday with her family, and share every compliment that popped in her head.
She was the most caring individual a person could meet. As a child, through her father’s sickness and after his death, she would work in a factory then come home to cook dinner for her siblings and mother. That instinctive supportive nature would become integral to who she was. She would ensure her children got home safe, her husband was taken care of through his battle with Parkinson’s, and always offered you a cup of tea when you visited her.
Conceição may have only been a mother to two biological children, but in her 85 years, 9 months, and 5 days, she raised and supported siblings, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, a community, and every underdog she came across.
Her door was open to anyone who needed help. Her hope was that others would do the same.
