Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Melania Dmytryshyn, a dear wife, mother, and grandmother on July 22, 2023. Beloved wife of 60 years to Omelan, mother of Robert (Natalia), and Myron (Dianne). Her five granddaughters Julia, Kristen, Nika, Sophika, and Clara were a great source of pride and pleasure.

Melania was born in Stawisza Poland, the youngest child of Marta and Toma Dzumbelak. After completing her studies in Warsaw and heading the hospital laboratories in Szprotawa, she decided to join her sisters in Canada and embarked on her journey in 1960, settling in Toronto one year later. She met her beloved husband Omelan in 1962, and they were married in Winnipeg in 1963. Their honeymoon to the southwest United States was their first long trip together, and sparked a love of family travel. In fact their only time apart in 60 years was when Melania and her sister travelled back to Poland for the funeral of her mother. Otherwise, they were inseparable.

Melania was an avid learner who was able to complete her education in Canada, obtaining her real estate broker’s license, followed by her college diploma. She was a successful real estate broker who won many awards throughout her distinguished career. She passed on her love of learning to her sons and granddaughters, taking great pride in their achievements. She was thrilled that all of her sons and granddaughters have completed university degrees.

She loved spending time with family, and enjoyed hosting and attending family celebrations – all opportunities to showcase her favourite outfits. She loved nature and anyone who lives in central Etobicoke has undoubtedly spotted Melania and Omelan on their long daily treks.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Dr Rachel Wortzman and the staff and volunteers at Dorothy Ley hospice for their exceptional and empathic care.

She will be missed by many, but mostly by her family at home and abroad, on whom she has left an indelible impression. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Canada Ukraine Foundation or Dorothy Ley Hospice

Dear Omelan, Bohdan, Natalia, Myron and Dianne; Julia, Kristen, Nika, Sophika and Clara, and the rest of our family. We offer our deepest condolences. Know that our hearts and thoughts are with you. Regular visits with Teta Mela, Vuyko Omelan and cousins Bohdan and Myron are amongst my earliest and most cherished childhood memories and although our visits have become so infrequent since I moved to Vancouver thirty years ago, it seems like it was just yesterday. I will focus on those good memories to help get over my sadness. Rest in peace dear Mela. Спочивай у спокої Цйоцю. Love Ivan, Nancy and Philipa
