Obituary

Sofia Wowk passed away peacefully at home on February 24, 2026. She is survived by her beloved daughter Maria (Oleh) and loving youngest sister Myroslava. She is predeceased by her husband, Petro Wowk, her parents Maria Hunka and Yakiv Pazdrij and her siblings, Vasyl, Anna, Ivan, Hryhorij, Eugenia, Olena, Olha, and Uliana. Sofia will be missed by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews in Canada, United States, England and Ukraine.

Sofia was born in the village of Toky, Ukraine on October 11, 1931. One of ten siblings, she grew up on a village homestead. She often recounted countless stories of her childhood and early adulthood. Although life was not easy, Sofia always spoke fondly of her life in Toky, especially of the life lessons learned from her parents which she carried throughout her lifetime.

During her visit to Canada, Sofia met her husband in Toronto. They were married on October 10, 1967. Shortly thereafter, they welcomed their only child, daughter Maria, whom they loved dearly.

Sofia was an avid gardener, cook, storyteller, coin collector and keeper of family history and traditions. She enjoyed spending time in her garden and tending to her many indoor plants. As the “hostess with mostess”, Sofia hosted many family and friend gatherings featuring various delicious dishes with pyrohy, kapusta, oseledtsi and medivnyk being her specialties. Everyone would be welcomed into her home with kind words and she would make sure no one left hungry and empty handed. In her later years, Sofia was fond of sitting on the porch watching the comings and goings of Colbeck Street.

Above all, faith and family were Sofia’s guiding principles during her entire life. She loved her family deeply and always prayed for their wellbeing. Sofia was always happy, smiling and enjoying life.

Вічная Пам’ять дорога Мамо!!!

Marusia, my dear dear (and longtime)family friend 🧡. I am heartbroken to hear about your mom's passing. My heart is breaking for you. Your mom was such a kind and loving person. All the good memories rushing in when I think about your mom. Our families have shared so many, beautiful memories growing up on Beresford and Colbeck. I’m here to share in your sorrow. Your mom was a gentle soul and I'm a better person for having had the opportunity to live/grow up next to your family for all those years. Holding you close in my thoughts and hoping you are doing OK. I am so sorry! I love you, Olenk Pushan(and John). 6476889979

Maria, Oleh and family. We just heard the news of Sofia’s passing and we are so profoundly sorry and our hearts hurt to hear this. Chris and I cherished our time talking with Sofia over the years. I always looked forward to bumping into her and having a chat. I feel privileged to have known such a strong Ukrainian woman. I am honoured that I was able to speak with her about so many things over the years - both big and small, some light and others deeply profound. She had such a warmth and light to her that reminded me of my Baba. I was so thrilled to talk Ukrainian culture and speak the very few Ukrainian words I knew to her. When I first met her I told her my name middle name is Sophia and that my Baba’s name was also Sophia and since that very day she called me this name and I was so happy to be a part of the Sophia club. There were so many things that made her special. Chris and I loved her humour and wit. I loved seeing her care for her garden, her home and hear about her love for her family. I am so sorry for your loss, I cant imagine what you are going through. She was such a special person and I am sure the best mother to have. I hope she is resting in peace now. Sending warmth and prayers your way. We are here if you need anything. Thinking of you all during this painful time.
