Obituary
Teresa Spanó Pietropaolo passed away suddenly at the age of 91 years. Loving wife of the late Vincenzo (2012). Cherished and loved mother of Rocco, Teresa (Tony), Domenico (Nelly) and Tina (Mark) and beloved nephew Marcello. Proud nonna of Robert (Thanh), Lisa, Cristina (Kevin), Tessa (Matt), Elyssa (Sam), Andrew and Marisa. She will be dearly missed by her brother-in-law Francesco, her sister-in-law Palma and all of her nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family and friends here in Canada and abroad in Italy and Argentina. She emigrated to Canada from Maierato, Italy in 1959. Through hard work and her passionate love of her family, she persevered through the hardships and blessings of immigration to leave a legacy that will live on in all who knew her. She will always be remembered for her strength of character and her passion for storytelling. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or any charity of one's choice. Gatherings will be limited to up to 50 people at a time in a visitation suite. When coming for a visitation, guests are asked to pay their respects to the deceased, acknowledge the family from a safe distance and exit the suite. Once guests exit the visitation suite, we kindly ask them to exit the funeral home to allow other guests the same opportunity. The family understands that not everyone is comfortable attending the Funeral Home for visitation or the church for the Funeral Mass. Teresa had a wonderful, stoic presence. Her warmth and humour will always remain with me as hallmarks of her unique Calabrian personality. Along with others, I celebrate her long life and her bright presence within our extended family.
Micol, Samantha and I offer our hearfelt condolences to her children—Rocco, Domenic, Teresa and Tina and their respective families. We extend our condolences to all the other family members who will miss her and remember her life among us.
My health did not allow me to attend her wake and funeral but I was there in spirit to honour her alongside her grieving family and friends. My love and support to all who cherish Teresa. May her memory be a blessing.

Remembering Zia Teresa.
Turn off the television, disconnect the telephone, take a pause. Zia Teresa, the true keeper of family history, the matriarch of the Spanò clan, has gone. A storyteller among storytellers she indisputably was. In Calabrese, Italian, or Italiese. The kitchen table was her preferred stage, where she held any and all visitors as captive audience, and enthralled them with her melodious voice that would break into song at a moment’s notice, recite a poem, or reel off a proverb or an axiom or a dictum or an epigraph… She never tired of her favourite protagonists Johà, Michelaccio, and l’anticu (the ancient one). Through them she always delivered a clever lesson, always right for the occasion, always wise in her counsel. Her “book” of stories was her memory. Endless invisible pages engraved in her being. With her trademark smile and humour, her mantra was pace e bene—peace and goodwill.
For many of us, COVID-19 imposed an unnatural separation from her, but the bonds for those who she loved—and whom did she not love?—could only grow deeper as she took to the telephone to reach out to those of us “busy” with life. In the age of coronavirus, we mark her passing from this life in silence and solitude, each in our own way. But as surely as she touched us with her love, so too shall we carry traces of Teresa with us in our own journey: her warm smile, kind demeanor, and passion for the other. May she rest in peace and may her light shine upon us all.
