Obituary





It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the Right Reverend Mitrophoric Archimandrite Dimitri Pankiw on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at Toronto Western Hospital at the age of 51. Right Reverend Dimitri Pankiw was a longtime Pastor and Associate Pastor at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Toronto where he was dearly cherished and loved by all. Rt. Reverend Dimitri Pankiw was predeceased by his mother Maria Makaj and his stepfather Petro Pankiw. Rt. Reverend Dimitri will be fondly remembered and missed by Most Reverend Bishop Stephen Chmilar, Eparch of Toronto and Eastern Canada, Reverend Roman Lobay, Pastor and longtime school friend, brother priests of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, clergy of the Toronto Eparchy and parishioners of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. His generosity, kindness and gentle unassuming nature will be especially remembered and missed by all members of the Teply family, as well as by his godchildren Orest Hoffman in Vancouver, Andrijko Teply in Toronto and Yurij and Orest Schardt in Edmonton. Rt. Reverend Dimitri Pankiw was born in Zagreb, Yugoslavia on January 17, 1957. He arrived in Canada in 1964 where he attended King Edward Public School. He completed his high school studies at the Pontifical Ukrainian Minor Seminary in Rome in 1974 and then furthered his studies at the Pontifical Urban University and Pontifical Institute of Oriental Studies in Rome. During these years, he resided at the Pontifical Ukrainian St. Josaphat's Major Seminary. Rt. Reverend Dimitri Pankiw was ordained into the deaconate in 1979 and into the priesthood in 1980 at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church by Most Reverend Bishop Isidore Borecky. He touched very many hearts serving as Associate Pastor and Pastor of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Chaplain of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood - St. Nicholas Branch, Administrator of St. Volodymyr and Olha (Cawaja Beach), Holy Dormition of the Mother of God Ukrainian Catholic Church (Bathurst St., Toronto), Rector of St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral (Toronto), Secretary at the Chancery Office under Most Reverend Bishop Isidore Borecky, and Chaplain of the Youth Organization Plast. Funeral Services will be held at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church (4 Bellwoods Ave.) on Monday, June 9 and Tuesday, June 10 at 7:00 p.m., concluding with Pontifical Divine Liturgy on Wednesday, June 11 at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Park Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of the late Rt. Reverend Dimitri Pankiw may be made to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. "
