Obituary

Samantha Downey was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with roots in North Preston, Nova Scotia. Samantha was known as 'Joy' to her family. Joy passed away suddenly on Friday, November 29, 2019 after returning home from being hospitalized from health complications due to diabetes. A lover of sudoku, crossword puzzles and lottery tickets, Joy was an articulate conversationalist who loved words and books. She collected hats, purses and shoes, and loved to show them off. After retiring from Goodwill stores as a cashier, Joy became a proud volunteer at The Parkdale Food Bank. She was a long-time resident in the Parkdale neighbourhood and was loved by the community. She will be dearly missed. Joy is survived by her sisters; Ertha Downey and Dolly Wright (Tarik), her brothers; Quinten Downey, Fulton Downey, Otis Downey and Sonny Downey, her nieces; Akilah Downey (Francisco), Shaniquea Wright, Cleo Wright, Clea Wright, Amonee Wright, Amena Wright, Anyla Wright, Azaria Wright, Bella Downey, Ciara Downey, Maria Downey and Angel Wright (deceased), her nephews; William Kyle Downey, Lether Wright, Nygel Wright, Jake Almeida, Ahmod Wright, Aziz Wright, Lewis Thompson, Shakur Downey and Jameel Downey. Joy was loved by her aunts; Loffie Downey, Dolly Simmonds (Donald, deceased), Esonia Taylor (Charles), Betty Paquet (Joe), and Yvonne Downey, her uncles; Fulton Downey (Sandra), Basol Downey (Epherin, deceased) and Jeff Downey (Nadine). Joy will be missed by her first cousins; Victoria (Sugar) Downey, Randolph (Bo) Downey, Denise Downey, Natalie McKinnon (Iain), Mora Goddard, Donakin Downey, Christi-lyn Downey Skinner, Julian Downey, Julianna Downey, Sabrama Fulton (Eldon), Zensi Taylor (Derick), LoffieAnn Downey (Kelsey), Lorraine Maxwell, Susan Downey, Fulton Downey III, Carmen Wayner, Margaret (Janie) Downey, Alias Downey (Glenda), Cy Downey, a special relationship with Joseph (Ti Joe) Paquet  and a very special neighbour, Steve. Joy will be missed by her second and third cousins. Joy is predeceased by her mother, Quincie Downey; her sister, Cleo (Tiny) Downey; her niece, Racine Downey; her uncle Lester (Lefty); her cousins, Hilton Downey and Damien Taylor, and her dearest friend, Maura O'brien. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Diabetes Canada.
