Obituary

Brendan Smyth was an exceptional photographer, an experienced world traveller, a talented musician, an organizational and technical guru, a proficient skateboarder and snowboarder, a confidant, mentor, friend, husband, brother, and son. One of his Instagram personas, @WhereMyFeetHaveTakenMe, shared a fraction of his creative output but was also a great example of how he lived his life  -- eagerly seeking out adventures around the world. Indeed, Brendan’s feet took him to many incredible places.

Sometimes, however, feet take you places you never intended to go.

In 2017 Brendan developed a rare form of cancer (solitary fibrous tumour). Complications during the surgery to remove the tumour resulted in Brendan almost losing his leg. Yet, months of demanding physical therapy and rehabilitation finally allowed him to walk again and to return to work.

Unfortunately, the cancer reappeared. In spite of the situation, Brendan made every day count and continued to make time for his friends and family.

He has had a permanent impact on so many people and we are left behind as he embarks on his final adventure.

If desired, memorial donations to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre - The Palliative Pacer Fund would be appreciated by the family.

I was in photography school with Brendan at Sheridan, and he was a lovely guy. Always kind, decent, and cool. He gave me a ride to Kingston once and I got to see his childhood home- I understood that he was proud of his roots and respectful of his parents. He was a generous sweet person who deserved to live a long healthy life. I am so sorry for your loss of Brendan.

Really saddened to hear the news. I studied Photography at Sheridan College with Brendan, and many others. Our community is pretty tight knit. After graduation, I worked down on Carlaw assisting some Photographers just as Brendan did and many others from our class. I would would run into him regularly for ten years or so until I moved on to new roles outside of that neighbourhood. I couldn't say that I knew him extremely well, but I can tell you, from what I did know- he was one of the NICEST, KINDEST, and pretty dang TALENTED to boot. My heart is with his wife, family and friends - I can't even begin to comprehend what you're feeling right now. Sending you all so much love and prayers during this difficult time.

Brendan started assisting when I just started out as a photographer. He supported me technically and emotionally, always calm and capable, making my day go a lot smoother. I’ll remember our road trips, conversations, his 30th birthday party, his smile and laughter. I’m so lucky to have known Brendan.

I was not fortunate enough to have known Brendan personally but all I have heard from my daughter and her fiancée have been positive. I am familiar, however, with the tragic devastation cancer brings to the sufferer as well as the secondary sufferers who love them the most. May you all find peace in his memory.
