Obituary
Cândido De Sousa
January 20, 1935 – July 25, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Candido De Sousa, who passed away peacefully at the age of 90.
Candido was born on January 20, 1935, in Alvarães, Portugal. On November 17, 1957, he married the love of his life, Laurinda Carneiro, in Portugal. Together, they immigrated to Canada in April 1960 to build a better life and raise their family.
Candido was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was the proud father of six children: David (Laura), Aida, Manuel (Kayla), Nelson (deceased), Victor (Susan), and Lucy (Frank). He was blessed with 15 grandchildren: Nelson, Joanne, Frankie, Victoria, Sierra, Vincent, Daniel, Chystian, Steven, Olivia, Julia, Emily, Michael, Andrew, and Domenic. His love extended to his four great-grandchildren: Amiyah, Aleese, Reese, and Jax, who brought him immense joy in his later years.
Family was the most important thing in Candido’s life. He was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren, and he lit up whenever he spoke about them. His happiest moments were spent around the dinner table, surrounded by loved ones, sharing good food, good company, and laughter.
After arriving in Canada, Candido developed a deep love for hockey and proudly supported the Toronto Maple Leafs, never missing a game until his vision no longer allowed him to watch. He then returned to his Portuguese roots, spending hours listening to his first love—soccer—on his cherished radio, cheering for F.C. Porto, the team closest to his birthplace.
Candido loved attending social events and was always ready to dance and enjoy himself. He carried his Portuguese heritage with pride and a deep feeling of saudade for his beloved homeland. A true admirer of fado, his favourite singer was the legendary Amália Rodrigues.
Candido was known for his warm heart, strong family values, and good sense of humour, which brought joy to those around him. In his later years, the loss of his eyesight limited his ability to live life as fully as he once had, but he continued to cherish every moment spent with his loved ones.
Candido’s memory will live on in the hearts of his loving wife Laurinda, his children, grandchildren, and all who knew and loved him.
