Obituary
KOHUT, Anna (nee Grechyn) - April 16, 1921 - June 27, 2011 Born in Tarnawka, Ivano Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine the youngest of four children. As a teenager, she survived German and Russian occupation, repeated secondary school exams in three different languages as the front shifted and went on to complete Teacher's College. Torn from her family, she faced hunger, fear of repression and the knowledge that her family was swept away by execution and the Gulag. She married and escaped west with her husband Michael during the war, giving birth to their son Myroslaw in 1944 in Vienna, which was then on the front. She immigrated to Canada in 1948 with her husband and son to Victoria, BC where she found work as a seamstress at George Straight and Sons, while her husband did manual labor although trained as a Chemical Engineer. She became a full-time mother, giving birth to her daughter Vera in 1954. The family moved to Edmonton in 1956-57 where friends of Michael had helped him secure work as a Research Chemical Engineer. She was bright, beautiful and tough. Her life was one of courage, tenacity and sacrifice for her children in the face of the difficulties she had to overcome. She is survived by her son Myroslaw Kohut in Kyiv, Ukraine; daughter Vera Kohut, granddaughter Lesia Kohut and great-granddaughter Mylana, in Toronto; and granddaughter Larissa Kohut, great-granddaughter Roxolana and great-grandson Maxem in Victoria.
