Obituary

    Ihor Pelech

Peacefully, on Sunday April 4, 2021, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Ihor Pelech, passed away after a short illness.  He leaves behind his wife Mary, his three sons Danylo (Cyndi), Josyf (Natalie) and Mattej (Patrycja) and his five grandchildren Nathan, Mark, Vera, Juliana and Luca whom he adored.  Also, left to mourn him are his sister Olha and brother-in-law Garrett Marinacci, sister-in-law Oksana with husband Bohdan Ciz, nephew Zenon (Marta) and niece Olenka as well as family in Canada and Ukraine.

Ihor was a passionate teacher as was his calling, having spent his entire career at St. Andrew’s Junior High School as Head of English, a position he cherished.  He took pride in his work, demonstrated in the fact that he had tests, essays and exams all marked and returned to his students the next day.  His retirement celebration was a fitting testament to his exemplary teaching career.

His retirement years were spent quietly enjoying time with his family.  Ihor was a cherished husband, wonderful father and grandfather, much loved and respected by all who knew him.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, funeral arrangements are by invitation only.  Donations in memory of Ihor Pelech may be made to:  The Ukrainian Catholic Sobor of The Holy Protection, 30 Leeds Street, Toronto.

Due to the current Covid - 19 restrictions in Toronto that allow a maximum number of guests to attend a funeral, the service details will be kept private and attendance will be by invite-only.

The family thanks you for your support and understanding during this challenging time.

I'm a bit late to learn about his passing, but based on his impression of me as a grade 8 English student back in the 1990s I think he'd find it hilarious that I'm late. I've lived abroad for a long time and my connections to people who might have informed me have long withered away, so - okay, sorry, Mr. Pelech, I won't make excuses. The fact that I googled his name a quarter century after he taught me and feel so saddened to learn that he passed away says it all. Going to his classes were fun escapes from the anxiety of junior high. I will never forget how to spell the word "pyrrhic". I still find it funny that he used "Spindel's notebook" as an example of an oxymoron for the class. I don't know what he was like outside of class, but he sure seemed to care in it. A great man. My condolences.

To the Pelech family. My deepest condolences on your tremendous loss. Mr. Pelech was my English teacher at St. Andrew’s in the late 70’s. He instilled in me a love for Shakespeare and the English language. I can still recite my grade 9 soliloquy! His class stands out as one of my favourites. As one of his few Ukrainian students, he was never shy of correcting my Ukrainian as well! Know that his passion influenced many people. I was fortunate to be one of them. Вічная пам’ять

Mary and family, My sincere condolences to you and all of the family. This is a shock. Ihor taught just down the hall from me and I had the greatest respect for his enthusiasm, professionalism and expertise. He was a very respected staff member and the community of St. Andrew's parents held him in high esteem. May God supply you with the peace and comfort that only He can give.

Dear Mary and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Ihor was a wonderful colleague and impacted so many including myself. It was a wonderful privilege to work with him at St. Andrew's JHS. Psalm 34:18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. May you know this truth at this time.
