Obituary

Julie Marie Turylo (24 May, 1934 - 1 September, 2010) was born in West Toronto to Katharine and Gregory (Harry) Skabarnicki. From childhood she helped the closely knit Ukrainian immigrant community with English translation, negotiation, and paperwork. She excelled at school and in music, winning numerous piano competitions and a prestigious scholarship in voice as well as academic honours. A graduate of Bloor Collegiate and Trinity College of Music (A.T.C.L., piano), she went on to graduate from the University of Toronto in physical and occupational therapy. Greatly appreciated by her patients and students at St. Joseph's and West Park Hospitals, Julie devoted her time after retirement to her grandchildren Paul and Kristina, and served on the board of Swansea Town Hall. She was predeceased by her parents and sister Mary Resney and is survived by husband Walter, sister Anne Skabarnicki (Robert Scavone), son Peter Turylo (Teresa Smith), and daughter Cathy Turylo (Valdis Martinsons). Beloved by all for her deep commitment to family and community, she died at Baycrest Hospital after a valiant struggle with scleroderma. Sincere thanks to the doctors, staff and friends at Baycrest Hospital who helped so much in her last two years. There will be a celebration of Julie's life Saturday, October 23, at Swansea Town Hall, 95 Lavinia Ave., Toronto. Limited parking is available. The family will receive friends beginning at 4:30 p.m. and service at 5:30 p.m. with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scleroderma Society of Canada (www.scleroderma.ca). Online condolences and memories can be sent to www.cardinalfuneralhomes.com

Julie was one of my first therapists as an undergraduate P&OT student at West Park Hospital. She was compassionate and helpfully practical to her patients and a wonderful role model to students like me. I saw her from time to time throughout my career, and remember her fondly for her wonderful qualities. nancy christie
