Lorraine Alice Wright

January 7, 1940-December 24, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce Lorraine Alice Wright (nee Slotek), died peacefully in her sleep at Michael Garron Hospital on December 24, 2023. She was 83. We wish to thank the staff at the hospital and Ina Gage Grafton Home for their excellent and thoughtful care.

Lorraine is mourned by her sons, David (Olivia) and Daniel (Sheila); her grandsons Samuel, Andrew, and Orlando; brothers Larry (Lynne) and Jim (Bianca) ; nieces Amy (Tolga), Kate (Mike), Melanie (Ken)Deniz, Samara; nephews Michael, Jacob, Jason, Thomas, Robbie, Ariel and Devrim and many other beloved friends, family and acquaintances.

Born in Sudbury, Ontario on January 7, 1940 to Leona and Nicholas Slotek, the family moved to Transcona, Manitoba in her early childhood, where she achieved a Fine Arts degree from the University of Manitoba. She went on to teach at various schools in Winnipeg, from Churchill to Argyle.

Lorraine was best known for her vintage clothing stores in both Winnipeg and Toronto. She opened ‘Kitsch Lorraine’ in 1985 and began hosting private parties with numerous talented Toronto musicians in the Queen Street West jazz scene over the decades. She was a strong woman who lived a life full of joyful art. Her surroundings were uniquely colourful, cheap, and chic. She was always giving and supportive of everyone in the community.

In her honour, she would have wanted you to celebrate her life everywhere there are family friends and music.

Please help relieve the suffering of those with Alzheimer's disease by supporting programs such as JAZZ-FM’s Memory Project. Lorraine directly supported the Covenant House shelter for youth and Booth House shelter for women at 723 Queen Street West (links below).
