Obituary
It is with profound sadness that the family of Abel Pereira Peixoto announce his peaceful passing on October 2, 2024.
His journey into the afterlife started with his wife and best friend of 64 years at his side as she had been every day since his hospitalization in late September 2023.
Abel was born January 27, 1933 in Pico Azores. Crossed the ocean on a ship to Canada after his mandatory term in the Army.
Upon his arrival, he worked on the railway replacing ties, but quickly changed to being a lumberjack in British Columbia where he started out with an axe felling trees but quickly invested in a chain saw. Searching for more adventure he then worked laying gas pipeline (along Dufferin Street near what is now Yorkdale mall) and traveled to the States to achieve his heavy equipment license. He returned to Pico and married the love of his life in 1960 but returned alone to Canada to prepare things before returning to the Azores and bringing her along to Canada in 1962 to start the next chapter of their lives.
He established himself in Beardmore, Ontario felling trees with his cousin and a mare during the summers and living with fellow countrymen in a small home near Gladstone and Queen in Toronto during the fall to spring.
During his return to Toronto in 1965, and preferring stable employment away from the elements, he applied for a job at Ford in Oakville where he completed his working career after 31 years.
The next chapter in his life saw him sharing his time between his homeland and his adopted homeland.
Abel will be missed by his extended family and friends, including his wife Alice (nee Fernandes), his daughter Gina, grandchildren Christopher, Natalie, and Michael-James, son Nelson wife Lori and her children Nathan, Anderson, Griffin and Brodie and his great grandchildren Braeden, Isabella, Joshua.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Sick Children’s Hospital sickkidsfoundation.com or to Saint Michael’s Hospital foundation [email protected]
The family would like to pass on their heartfelt appreciation for those that provided such compassionate life care at both St. Michael’s Hospital and the Runnymede Healthcare Centre.
