Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Antonio de Melo Leandres announce his sudden passing late on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at the age of 92.

Antonio will be dearly missed by his adoring wife of 64 years, Felicidade, and lovingly remembered by his children, Tony, Luis (Lina), Joe, Delia (Ryan); grandchildren, Jesse, Alicia, Lauren, Rowan; siblings, Deolinda (d. Antonio) and Jose (Helena); and numerous other family members and friends.

Antonio was predeceased by his parents, Jose and Maria Leandres; sibling, Maria Sousa.

Antonio was born on the Azorean Island of Santa Maria, in the small parish of Santo Espirito. At the age of 27, Antonio crossed the Atlantic in search of a future in Canada. He first settled in British Columbia, laying railway track for CP Rail. Through a good friend and co-worker, Armando, Antonio met his future wife through pictures. A fellow Azorean, they were married by proxy in 1959 and Felicidade flew over to be with him. They then moved to Ontario where they raised a big family.

Antonio enjoyed many summers back in his little beach house in Sao Lourenco, Azores. Antonio loved his garden and his fado. His strength and joyous presence will always be cherished and forever missed.

Dear Leandres Family, We send you our sincere condolences during this difficult time. I will always remember Senhor Antonio as a generous soul who was always willing to welcome others and share his great love for his family and his Azorean culture. Whether celebrating "as soupas" or showing off his garden it was always a treat to be able to spend time with him. He will be missed by many.
