Obituary

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I share the passing of Christopher Charles Black.

Chris is survived by his life companion Gail, son Aidan (Dianne) and grandson William. He was predeceased by his parents, Patricia and Bert and leaves sisters Frances and Susan (Terry) and brother Antony.

Chris suffered a sudden and massive stroke on the morning of May 28th to which he succumbed on the 5th of June , 2025 in his 76th year. He was a loving companion and Father, an International Criminal Lawyer, Activist, Actor, Writer, Story Teller, Author, … Chris wore many hats, at least figuratively if not literally! And the list goes on – Musician, Traveler, Orator, Teacher and Friend.

We all know and remember Chris as someone who was a freethinker and iconoclast and as someone who saw the world differently yet was intensely interested in everything and everyone. Chris expected that we might not always agree with him, yet he understood we had the right to be wrong.

We all knew Chris in our own way and likely would describe him differently as well, yet he remains unforgettable.

We have lost, nay! The world has lost yet another warrior poet.

Christopher was and will always be enigmatic with that rakish smile and twinkle in his eye.

Bang the drum slowly and play the Fife lowly Somehow he would not want us to hang our heads but raise them, take a deep breath and look to the horizons.

Farewell Comrade.

Donations in memory of Christopher may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

My sincerest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the courageous lawyer, author, poet and all around renaissance man, Chris Black. I have known Chris for decades, and he exemplified the ideal of a lawyer: fearless and uncompromising in fighting for rights of the wronged. I cherish his friendship and the time I spent working with him here in Canada and abroad, for justice and peace. He is sorely missed.

I last saw Chris in November in Belgrade, having not seen him for many years. He was a remarkable man whom I am honoured to have known as a colleague and a friend. I will never forget his intellectual rigour and honesty. His passing comes just a month or so after that of our mutual friend, also an excellent international lawyer, Alexander Mezyaev. May he rest in peace.

I offer my deepest sympathy to my family, Gail, and the friends of my nephew, Christopher. I have fond memories of babysitting Christopher and his sister, Frances, in England many years ago. His untiring energy of climbing the cherry tree in our back garden when visiting us never ceased to amaze! While many of us may have the same or different philosophical opinions in life, it is with our family where our souls will rest in peace. I think Christopher would align himself with Victor Hugo, who, when faced with the loss of his beloved daughter, Léopoldine, would want to find “a better outlook on the universe.” Rest in Peace, dear Christopher. Dear Family and Friends of Chris, I was very shocked to hear of Chris's passing. He was a good friend and fellow activist in the movements for peace, social progress, and socialism. A true internationalist Chris spoke boldly in the cause of a better world, a world where people would live in peace without hatred. It was an honour to know Chris and work with him.
