Obituary
Ernesto Manuel Santos
(1944-2026)
Ernesto Manuel Santos was born on February 9th, 1944 in a small house in Agua D’Alto, São Miguel Isl., Açores. He died at home in Toronto on August 15th, 2026 surrounded by his family.
As the eldest of eight children, Ernesto’s life had been marked for hard work since the beginning. Ernesto started working in fields at the age of ten. In his early adulthood, he served for twenty-seven months in the Portuguese military in Angola. After his service, he married and immigrated to Canada in 1968. He would work construction and maintenance for Greenwin and Shiplake Management until his retirement in 2009.
Ernesto led with an iron fist and a golden heart. A respected and dedicated member of his community, Ernesto was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. He volunteered his time at Banda do Sagrado Coração de Jesus and Irmandade do Divino Espírito Santo at St. Helen’s Parish.
The legacy he leaves to his wife Elmira, children Teresinha and Sam (Suzy), and grandchildren Emma and Ciara is tremendous—a kingdom where there once was a stable. Ernesto is now joined with his mother Estrela, father Angelo, and brother José. He is survived by his siblings Gabriel, Fatima, João, Carlos, Zelia, and Eduarda. The hearts of his loved ones are full knowing that after his long fight with health complications, Ernesto is finally getting some rest.
