Obituary

Beloved son of the late Antonio and Idalina da Cunha, Francisco passed away surrounded by family in the early morning of October 5th, 2021 at the age of 89. Francisco was the cherished husband of Gloria (nee Cachetas), adored father of Fernando, Robert and Marlene (Michael) as well as beloved and loving grandfather of Adam and Leandro. Francisco was predeceased by his brother, Fernando and sister, Rosa; he leaves behind his brothers, João (Maria Julia), José (Maria), Antonio (Rosa), Manuel (Lucilia) and sister, Maria (Joaquim) as well as sister in law, Luciene, and several nephews and nieces. He leaves behind family members in Canada, Portugal, France, Luxemburg and Brazil.

Francisco faced great challenges in his life in Portugal and moved to Brazil at the early age of 18 to be with his cousin, José. His years in Rio de Janeiro were some of his most treasured; he loved to sing Brazilian songs, talk about Brazilian culture and joyfully recalled his time there. Francisco loved his family near and far, at the age of 26 he moved to Canada to be closer to his brother, Fernando. Francisco loved to work with his hands, he traded his woodworking carpentry skills learned, in Brazil, in exchange for operating the rugged lumber machines of northern Ontario until his retirement.

Francisco was a great conversationalist, he loved to tell stories, talk about history, had many friends and enjoyed a good laugh. He was a skilled tradesman who built three family homes for his family’s comfort.

The center of his life was his family, and the commitment to his wife was only surpassed by the deep love for each other, their children and their young grandchildren. He was always available for advice, politics, social opinions and telling stories. His wife and children are forever grateful for their time with him, and his memory remains in everyone’s heart as he will be greatly missed.  Donations in honour and memory of Mr. da Cunha may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
