Obituary

Ihor passed away peacefully after a tenacious 4 year battle with cancer. He was deeply loved by, and will be missed by his wife of 52 years, Valentina (Mychajlowska), son Peter (Melissa Russell), daughter Ulyana (Daniel Kuzmycz) and granddaughter Nina, as well as his sisters Sonia and Oksana (John Leeson) and his sister-in-law Lydia (Daniel Huzyk)

Ihor was born and raised in Sudbury and taught History and Music at Lasalle Secondary School. He was a talented, musician who played the violin, bandura, alto horn and piano. He moved to Toronto in 1973 and became a partner in Bloor Travel Agency where his extensive travels and his empathy proved to be invaluable assets.  He was an active member of the Ukrainian community in Sudbury and Toronto. Ihor was a proud and long-standing member of The COSBILD Club, The Canadian Ukrainian Opera Association and the Hole in One Tennis Group, among others.

We would like to share an interview with Ihor, recorded in 2017 about his life for the "Oral History of Ukrainian Canada" project by the Ukrainian Canadian Research and Documentation Centre (Toronto)

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal www.cufoundation.ca/.

"З Ігором я була на екзикутиві Студентського Клюбу. Це було давно. І ми залишилаися активістами в українській громаді. Наші життєві стежки часом перехрещувалися, останньо частіше. Ми тішилися і переживали за "україснську справу." Ігор був гарна, щира, доброжичлива людина. Його буде бракувати. Родині бажаю сили зосередитися на позитивних споминах. Таня Джулинська"

Dear Valya Kvitka and I send our deepest condolences to you and your family at this time of grief. I will miss Ihor and our regular phone conversations so very much. I cherished the time we spent reminiscing over our shared and individual experiences - particularly our favourite places to travel. If I mentioned I had visited Moscow and Kyiv in 1972, Ihor would come back with “When I was there a few years before that“... It seems we had much in common and I so enjoyed hearing all about his worldly travels. I feel lucky to have had such a dear friend, especially these last few years, to connect with. I will always remember how animated Ihor was when discussing his love of hiking. Whether it be the trails of Austria, Bavaria or Switzerland...that is how I will remember him. On a mountain trail, hiking, on his way to the Gates of Heaven. RIP my Friend Vichnaya Pamyat

To Valentina, Lydia and Daniel Huzyk, and their families, Although I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Ihor, my cousins Daniel and Lydia have told me many things, and I have read many more things about him and Valentina. What a wonderful and dynamic generous couple. Canada couldn't have a better contributing citizen than Ihor, whose humble, common sense, calm and kind attitude would make him an outstanding leader in any field. Zelenskyy would be proud of his and Valentina's contributions to their Ukrainian heritage, especially in the face of a genocidal, barbaric, maniac like Putin. I am prouder just knowing your story. My sincerest condolences. Ken and Christina Graham

Dear Valya, My deepest condolences to you and the family! I am so sorry for your loss. Ihor was an exceptionally kind, caring, loving and decent human being. I so enjoyed chatting with him at various community events. He always had a joke or two, an interesting observation about the event, and never short on discussion topics. I will be forever thankful for the two winter getaway trips he helped organize for me and my parents - they became special memories all because of his personal attention. I will miss him a lot. All of us will miss him a lot. He left a beautiful imprint in the world. May he rest in peace. Vichnaya pamyat! Keeping you in my prayers.

It is with great sadness we are coming to this. It supposed to happen at some point but it is always too early. Ihor was and always is a soft speaking and peaceful person, always calm and friendly. This is the way how we will remember you. Not mentioning his help to settle my family. We think it was his destiny in this world - to help. We even do not want to use this word - you were. You always is and will remain in our mind. Valia - you are a fighter. It will help you to get through this hard time. You must know - we are here to help you the way Ihor and You helped us to survive. Life goes on and will never stop. Walter and Alexandra Savich.

My deepest condolences to you Valentina and Ulyana, Petryk, and all of Ihor's siblings and family. Ihor is such an amazing example of a truly good human being, of a loving and supportive husband, an engaged and curious intellect, and a goodnatured, kind person who spread cheer wherever he was. I not only felt better about humanity every time I talked to him but when he talked I just let everything else drop away and always listened with full attention because the exchange was always so pleasant or I'd learn something new. He was an excellent conversationalist and an engaging, funny storyteller; he also always thought of you and shared information he came across related to an interest of yours or something that had come up in discussion, or something amusing. He was talented and playful in his thinking and had wide ranging interests, was generous and inclusive and charitable. He was a loyal and caring brother and a husband who was exemplary in his fierce support of his wife's lifelong projects. What a beautiful love story they had for over half a century, it was a privilege to see in action. I feel honoured and lucky to have known him, to have interviewed him for posterity, and in the end to be so deeply fond of him and a fan for life. Ihor, I honestly cannot believe I won't still talk to you or see your wry little smile again and shining eyes after you make a quietly, wickedly funny quip. You are deeply missed by many, but none of us will forget your light, your feel-good caring and your goodness. Царство Тобі небесне! Вічна Тобі Пам'ять! ❤️ 💙💛
