Obituary

In Loving Memory of João Calado Caetano

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of João Calado Caetano, who left us peacefully surrounded by his family. He was a man of immense warmth, whose life was defined by his deep love for his family, his faith, and his community.

Born in Maiorga, Alcobaça, Portugal, João carried his roots proudly throughout his life, maintaining deep connections with the family and good friends who still reside there today. In Portugal, he began his working life as a skilled ceramic painter—an artistic foundation that would later shape his next calling. After moving to Toronto, João transformed his artistry from clay to flour, becoming an excellent pastry chef. Alongside his beloved wife Maria, he owned and operated the well loved Venezia Bakery at Argyle and Ossington. For decades, his creative eye and meticulous craft shone through in every pastry he baked, earning their beloved shop a legendary reputation for creating what many rated as the very best custard tarts (pastéis de nata) in Toronto.

Above all else, João was a devoted family man. He shared a beautiful, lasting love with his beloved wife, Maria, who was the true center of his world. As a wonderful father, he was a constant source of guidance and unconditional love to his daughters, Margarida (Stephen) and Sandy (Hugo). That joy only multiplied when he became a proud grandfather to his granddaughters, Catherine (Joe), Carolina, and Cristina. He has now been reunited in peace with his predeceased granddaughter, his angel Carolina, whom he held dearly in his heart.

Beyond his home and business, João was a truly wonderful and kind person to his neighbours, customers, and friends. Whether offering a helping hand, baking for a milestone, or sharing a warm smile across the bakery counter, his generous spirit and friendly presence made his neighborhood a better place. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy of kindness, devotion, and love that will be carried on by all who knew him.
