Obituary

João (John) Nunes Vieira Neto passed away on Sunday December 9th, 2018 as a result of complications from a fall. He was 83 years old. João died very peacefully in hospital surrounded by his six loving children, their spouses, and one of his many grandchildren. After the death of his nurturing wife Madalena in 2005, João stayed in their family home despite the effects of his diabetes, including blindness. João remained an incredibly smart, funny and vocal man who would freely share his opinions or his stories with anyone who would listen. João did not like to speak of his early years in Madeira, Portugal as his own childhood was difficult with both of his parents passing before he reached adulthood. But the stories of his adult life were colourful and entertaining to hear: Especially those of how he met his wife, their emigration to Canada, raising six children together, buying their home in 1972, the importance of extended family, and working in the food receiving area of the Toronto General Hospital from 1975 until his retirement in 1998. João’s greatest legacy is his six remarkably accomplished children who are still very close thanks to his reminders of their importance to each other. João’s children, including their partners, and his grandchildren, welcome you to join in the celebration of João Neto’s life on Wednesday December 12 at Toronto’s Cardinal Funeral Home-Bathurst Chapel (366 Bathurst St) from 6:00 - 9:00 pm, and at his funeral on Saturday December 15th at 9:30 a.m. at St. Helen's Roman Catholic Church (1680 Dundas St. W.) with interment to follow at Prospect Cemetery (1450 St. Clair Ave W) at 11:30 am. Light refreshments will follow at Shoeless Joe’s (1980 St. Clair Ave W. *Please let one of the Neto siblings know if you are able to attend this reception*). With love and prayers for our father’s peace from the Neto family: John, George & Deepti (with grandchildren Michael, Jason, Mark, Jared and Kajal), Cecilia & Darrell (with Christine & Angelo, and Catherine & Ryan), Gene, Teresa & Bart (with Maarten and Madeline), and David & Robyn (with Emma and Adam).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the West Neighbourhood House would be greatly appreciated. https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/west-neighbourhood-house/
