Obituary

Jose Maria Mendes, born on November 23,1928 in Loule, Portugal. It is with great sorrow to announce the passing of Jose Mendes on January 21,2024.

A beloved husband to the late Lidia Mendes for 68 devoted years. Caring son of the late Maria Conceicao. Brother-in-law to the late Manuel Figueiras.

Adored and giving father to John Mendes and Susan Martins.  He will always be remembered by his daughter-in-law Ann Mendes and son-in-law Jose Martins.

As well as his grandchildren Mark (Jessica), Matthew (Melissa), Nicholas, Luke Mendes and Jason, Melissa and Kyle Martins. He leaves behind three great-grandchildren Gabriel, Jake and Olivia. He will also be remembered by his sister-in-law Susy Figueiras and nieces Nancy (Ken), Simone (Larry) and their families.

Our dad Jose was a devoted husband and family man who was proud of his children’s achievements. An immigrant who worked hard and enjoyed the company of his family gatherings and friends. He enjoyed gardening and making house wine.  He looked forward to visiting his home country in Portugal. Jose adored and loved caring for his grandchildren. He had a kind, playful and generous heart that will remain in our memories forever.

We are grateful for the loving care that Eula Maquelabit and Debbie Rich provided in his later years. Further gratitude to the staff at Wesburn Manor for his last two years.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in honour of Jose’s name to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
