Obituary

Peacefully at St. Joseph’s Health Centre on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at the age of 86. Beloved husband of Maria do Rosario Brasil. Loving father of Eduardo and Natalia, Theresa and Octavio Oliveira, Josezinho, and Lucy and Sam Tassone. Devoted grandfather of Steve Oliveira, Danny Brasil, Eddy Brasil, Jamie-Lynn Minns, Michael Tassone, Daniel Tassone and Jayden Brasil, and proud  great-grandfather of  Dillon, Matthew, Jacquelyn, Andrew, Natasha and Nicole. Dear brother of Maria Arruda, Felizarde Brasil, Eduardo Silveira and the late Manuel Silveira, Joao Brasil, Antonio Brasil and Jorge Brasil.  Jose  was the co-founder and leader of the first Portuguese marching band in Canada, the Banda do Senhor Santo Christo of St. Mary's Parish in Toronto. He also went on to play pivotal roles in numerous other bands across southern Ontario and eastern United States; more notably, the Banda Lira do Divino Espirito Santo, of London Ontario, the Banda da Nosa Senhora de Fatima of Toronto and the Banda Portuguesa de Hamilton. Friends may call at the Cardinal Funeral Home, 366 Bathurst Street (north of Dundas) on Saturday from 5-9 pm, and Sunday from 2-4 & 6-9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 26, 2009 at 9 am at St. Helen’s Church , 1680 Dundas Street West (East of Lansdowne). Entombment to follow in the Sacred Souls Mausoleum of Prospect Cemetery, 1450 St. Clair Avenue West (at Lansdowne).  If desired, donations in Jose’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.
