Thanks to the monumental efforts of Nicolau and Dionisia, my childhood was enriched with the cultural traditions of São Miguel on the streets of Toronto. The annual festa became a place to connect with the extended family — a true testament to his dedication to family bonds near and far. You always knew when Primo Nicolau was somewhere before you even entered the building, thanks to his personalised "Moniz" license plate. Knowing someone was there (other than my mother) who spoke English was always a huge comfort as well. I’m so grateful to have shared one last coffee with him 2 summers ago, and hope he is now enjoying a coffee with my mum, Cidalia, Melinda, Margie, Titia Margarida, Maria Anjos, Leonilde, Augusto, and many more. Prima Dionisia, Elan, Ethan, Carlos, Angie, and families, may you find comfort in the beautiful memories Nicolau created for all of us during his lifetime.
