Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Rafael da Ressurreição Preto on July 10, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on March 26, 1932, in Picote, Portugal, Rafael lived a life defined by integrity, hard work, generosity, and quiet strength.

Rafael was predeceased by his older brother, Abílio, and survived by his younger sister, Maria. Although he never married, he was a devoted and loving uncle to Fernando (Irene), Maria (Ashton), Isabel (Manuel), Ed (Denise), Samuel (Alda), and Teresa (Richard), and a cherished great-uncle and friend to many members of his extended family.

Growing up in the rural village of Picote, Rafael spent his early years helping on the family farm. In 1952, he proudly joined the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR), Portugal's national gendarmerie, and was eventually stationed at the GNR headquarters in Lisbon. During his years of service, he travelled extensively throughout Portugal by train, fostering a lifelong love of the country's countryside and railways.

In 1967, Rafael immigrated to Toronto, where he worked in the construction industry, travelling across Ontario with his crew. Along the way, he became fluent in Italian, a testament to his curiosity and gift for connecting with others.

Rafael was widely respected for his dignity, honour, and unwavering work ethic. He became a valued member of Toronto's Portuguese community and was admired by all who knew him. His greatest joy was tending to his vegetable garden, where family and friends would often find him. He took immense pride in sharing the fruits of his labour.

Rafael’s quiet wisdom, gentle spirit, and enduring generosity leave a lasting legacy that will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to The Canadian Cancer Society in Rafael's memory.
