We share the sad news that Christine Gandy passed June 12, 2022, after a time in hospital.  Born March 19, 1935, Chris is survived by her husband and fellow adventurer of 62 years, Douglas Gandy.

Chris lived a long and active life.  Her training as a speech pathologist led her to a satisfying career that included rehabilitation of stroke patients in a medical setting; teaching language skills to children in a special educational clinic; and enhancing the English as a Second Language skills of corporate clients.  In the 1980s, Chris established the company, Gandy Associates, as one of the first in the Business English training field, with a specialty in accent adjustment.

With her husband and friends, Chris enjoyed a vigorous outdoor life, involving wilderness canoe camping, cycling, hiking, back-packing trips, and Nordic skiing.  Her yen for adventure drew her to visit over 70 countries around the world, including Kenya, China and Nepal, where she volunteered to teach English conversational skills.

Inspired by her experience in overseas travel, Chris created the Gandy Outreach Award at the University of Toronto Speech Pathology faculty.  This award helps speech pathology students experience their profession in the conditions of Third World countries.

With an earnest desire to make the world a better place, Chris created the Gandy Charitable Foundation, which makes annual donations to selected charities in Toronto and abroad.

Chris’s sincerity, companionship and contagious energy were valued by her many dear friends, and her presence will be greatly missed.

My memories of Chris go back more than 60 years. When we graduated from Speech Pathology in 1961 our picture briefly graced the front page of the Globe & Mail. It disappeared from the paper when a construction calamity made the news. We often joked that fate was jealous of our brief moment of fame. Since then, Chris has had many many more noteworthy achievements. Some of these are listed in her obituary but those of us who knew her can tell you that she was even more than the total of these deeds. Much love to Doug: I trust her memory will help you get through the dark days.

Dear Doug, We are very sorry for the loss of your dearest friend, traveling companion, and wife. We have not known you both long, but enjoyed our visits with you when you were in Meaford visiting with Don and Linda. Wonderful tribute to Chris. Hi Doug, Indeed it was an irreparable loss. Pragya and I are very sorry for you. But it is an inevitable one and good part is that she really enjoyed a full life to its fullest. With your support, she made the world her home and that was why I, coming from the other side of the globe, was able to be a part of that home. We see your continued support and unconditional care to Chris, and this has made you an inspiration for me. You are always in our thoughts. We are all looking forward to celebrating together the rich life Chris had.
