Obituary

Evelyn was born into a large family of 11 in Nottingham England in January of 1930. She attended school until the age of 14 and afterwards went to work as a finisher, sewing garments and making lace by hand and later for the telephone company to help support her family. It was during this time that the invasion of Europe began, and she experienced war planes flying overhead and lived through the struggles of post war England.

Evelyn was a shy, kind and gentle person who always offered love and connection with a huge smile. She made good friends and loved riding her treasured bike whenever and wherever possible. At the age of 17 she met Jerry who would later become her husband. He was interned during the war across the street from her home, and it was a sweet romance considering he spoke little English and she, not a word of Ukrainian.

Despite everything, Evelyn chose to voyage to Canada to marry Jerry and start a new life. Quite a bold adventure for a young woman of 22. Their family grew with the birth of two children and she and Jerry worked hard to save for their future. She learned how to speak a bit of Ukrainian and learned to cook new foods. At times Evelyn was able to fly home to visit her family and kept in touch through letters and sending home-made parcels at Christmas for everyone to enjoy. She spoke of feeling homesick for the longest time.

Over the years Evelyn came to love Canada and her life here. She and Jerry grew old together until his passing in 2015 and she continued on enjoying her cups of tea and the company of people who loved her.

Evelyn Charak’s life was much fuller than a few paragraphs can ever relay but she had a lovely energy and spirit whose kindness and warmth made everyone feel connected and special her whole life.

My condolences to the family. Although many years have passed since my parents Erna and Peter Demianiuk were friends with your family I do remember your parents. I have a black and white photo with Charaks, Czypryndas, Shostaks and Demianiuks at a party having a good time. I believe it was before kids. If you would like to contact me I will gladly send it.
