Obituary

Halyna passed away Sunday, March 13, 2016 in Newmarket, Ontario. Born on April 11, 1930 in Kolky, Ukraine, she came to Canada following WWII and settled in Winnipeg. Throughout the 1960’s to the 1980’s, Halyna and her husband John (Sergei), were active in the literary and political life of the Ukrainian diaspora in western Canada. When she was thirty, Halyna became a writer for a Ukrainian newspaper, ‘The New Pathway’. Halyna’s columns were often controversial and led to plenty of political debates. Her reputation and commitment to Ukrainian culture led to her becoming the director of the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre (Oseredok) in Winnipeg. A lifelong learner, avid reader and political debater, Halyna earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba in 1978 and went on to obtain her PhD at the University of Alberta in 1987 for her thesis ‘Populism and Modernistic Tendencies in Ukrainian Literature’. Upon return to Winnipeg, Halyna taught Slavic Studies at the University of Manitoba. Halyna and John moved to Ontario in 1990 to be closer to their grandchildren. Halyna is survived by her daughters Svitlana and Taisa, son-in-law Colin and grandchildren: Tavis, William, Samantha and Stefan. Halyna was predeceased by husband John in 2013. Heartfelt thanks to Halyna’s caregivers at the Southlake Residential Care Village in Newmarket. Special thanks to Ahmed, whose kindness and attention helped Halyna for many years and for which the family is especially grateful.
