Obituary

At her residence in Mississauga on September 19th in the morning hours, Ida Hails, in her 100th year, passed away peacefully in her sleep.

She was the beloved wife of the late Robert Hails, who predeceased her in 1985. Ida’s beloved mother and father who were born in Ukraine immigrated to Canada in the early 20th century. Her father, John Zerebecki, preceded the family and worked for 2 years, allowing him to bring the family over. Anna, John and her older children homesteaded near Aran Saskatchewan where Ida was born in 1927. Ida is the second youngest of nine loving brothers and sisters. She was raised on the farm until she left in 1947, eventually moving to Toronto to marry her childhood school friend Robert Hails. (They had met in the one room Melmor school house). Ida and Robert were married in 1947.

Unfortunately, all of Ida’s siblings predeceased her. Pete was the oldest brother, followed by Sam, Joe and Andrew (the baby). Ida’s sisters were Polly, Stella, Tilly and Sophie. Ida was the youngest daughter. Ida had many adventures with Sophie and Andrew as they were the youngest. Her siblings lived across Western Canada except for her closest sister, Sophie. Ida and Sophie remained close until Sophie passed in 2002.

Ida is survived by her nephew Gary Hails, her niece Dianne Armstrong and Violet Ann’s husband Gary Jackson. (Violet Ann passed in 2023). Ida was Aunt to as many as 27 nieces and nephews and the great aunt of Carolyn Jackson, Katherine Jackson, David Jackson and Gary Hails’ sons Robert and Michael.

Bob and Ida lived happily in their home on Cedar Creek Drive. Ida tended the house and gardens, and they enjoyed the friendship of her many wonderful neighbours for many years. After Bob passed Ida continued in the home until illness forced her to move to the nearby Amica City Centre Seniors Living Residence. Ida captivated the hearts of the nurses and staff at Amica, and we would like to thank them for their good works in Ida’s name.
