Maria Da Esperança Faria

March 10, 1932 – July 26, 2026

Senhora Esperança immigrated to Toronto on July 29, 1971.

In 1982 she became a Canadian Citizen which was very important to her.  She studied very hard and achieved her goal.  When asked who she was voting for, her response was “I vote by secret ballot”.

From Rabo de Peixe, São Miguel, Açores. She was widowed in 1967 and left with five small children to care for. She worked very hard, having two jobs to support her family. Necessity taught her to be strong and independent.

Family was everything to her. She adored her 12 grandchildren and always had them take a group photo with her at every gathering. She also was great-grandmother to 17 little ones, aged from 14 years to 2 weeks. Due to her dementia, she did not know them, but she would have loved them just as she loved their parents.

She was very dedicated to her church, St. Agnes. Everyone would stop by during Festas do Senhor da Pedra. She was very proud of her granddaughters’ participation in the procession. She could feed people, regardless of how many showed up, and there was always extra food.

Due to health reasons, she agreed to move to O’Neill Long Term Care home. She was there for one year and then moved to Kensington Gardens. KG has been her home since 2010.

She was well cared for, thanks to the incredible, kind staff at KG. Special thanks to nurses Ammanuel, Tesh, Sargan and the many PSW’s who cared for our mother. A special mention to Maria João who was our saviour. Thank you for your kindness and patience. Special thank you to all the Portuguese workers that took the time to speak with our mother.

It brings the family comfort knowing she is with her beloved husband Jose Martins, her parents, and siblings.

We will never forget the incredible woman who was kind and generous to everyone, especially her five children (Jose Gil, João Luis, Maria da Esperança, Maria Filomena and Anna Margarida) who will miss her terribly. RIP.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice or Magellan Community Foundation.

Dear cousins, I’m very sorry for your loss. Prima Esperança lived a long and fulfilling life, and I’ve always remembered her generosity and the warmth she showed whenever I visited. Even though I’ve been away for many years, those memories have stayed with me — the friendliness, the kindness, and the way she made people feel welcome. I hope those moments bring you some comfort now, and that her spirit continues to shine through all of you. With love, Paulo Humberto (Melbourne, Australia)
