Obituary

In Memory of Maria Kos (nee Pelenska) 1922-2021

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Kos, our Mother and Grandmother, in her 99th year.

Beloved wife of the late Andrij Kos (1997). Loved Mother of Orest Kos (Zirka) and Andrew Kos (Natalie). Cherished Grandmother of Andrew and Christine. Predeceased by her brother Oleksa Pelensky .

Maria was born on October 1, 1922 in Komarno, western Ukraine. Fiercely proud of her Komarno lineage, she was the last survivor of the original Komarno immigrants. Orphaned at the age of 11, she went to live with relatives in Lviv. She married her childhood sweetheart Andrij Kos in 1943 in Komarno. Together they arrived at a refugee camp in 1945 in Landeck, Austria. In 1948 they made the decision to flee war- torn Europe and immigrated to Canada via Genoa ,Italy.

Upon arrival to Canada she worked at the Head Office of the Toronto Dominion Bank. Maria was also involved with the Plast Youth Organization and was an active member of Plast-Pryat. As the matriarch of the family, she lived independently in her own home until the last moments. She was blessed to have had such a rich life with extended family (Kurys, Rozanec, Martyniuk and Stebelsky families), wonderful neighbours (Patricia Smyth and Bob Kozutsky) and friends all over Canada, The United States and Ukraine.

Due to COVID 19 restrictions, a private family service will be held . Attendees will be contacted by the family. A Celebration of an Incredible Life will be held in the future when conditions allow.

In Memorium donations may be made to the Canadian Ukrainian Foundation Dzherelo Children’s Rehabilitation Centre or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Maxine and I would like to send our condolences to the family. I had the honour of knowing Marika for over 75 years, a close friend of my family, especially my mother Sophia. We came to Canada at the same time and as others of that generation made our life here. A full life well lived on her own terms. Vichnaya Pamiat!
