Obituary

Peacefully on April 4th, 2024, Maria (nee Perij) Lozinski passed away at Ivan Franko Home. The youngest of four children, she was born in 1925 to Timofij and Efrosinia (Farion) Perij in the village of Ridkiw, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine. She leaves in deep sorrow her daughters, Helen and Lilia, family in Ukraine, as well as neighbours and friends. Maria was predeceased by her beloved husband of 45 years, Wasyl Lozinski.

In spite of the hardships of village life in Volyn, Ukraine, under a series of foreign occupations, deportation by the Nazis as an Osterbeiter (slave labourer), camp life as a “displaced person” in the British zone and immigrant life in England and Canada, Maria remained loving and optimistic. Family, church and community were her priorities and she dedicated her many talents – cooking, sewing and singing – to making people happy.

Maria’s faith gave her inspiration to overcome many hardships. From the earliest days as an immigrant in Toronto, she became an active member of St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Maria never forgot her Ukrainian roots. She fondly recalled a young village teacher who instilled a love of Ukrainian language and culture in his students. In the “displaced persons” camps in the British zone of liberated Europe, Maria sang in choirs, recited poetry at cultural events and embroidered Ukrainian blouses. In Toronto, she encouraged her proud Canadian daughters to respect their Ukrainian heritage.

To support her family and contribute to her church and community, Maria worked hard cleaning homes and offices. Her relatives in Ukraine were deeply grateful for the support she provided all her life.

Maria will remain a source of strength and inspiration to her grieving family.

We moved into our neighbourhood September 2006 and so began a beautiful relationship with Maria who we fondly called Grandma Mary. From that first warm welcome she gave us, to the encouragement she always gave us as we tried very much in vein to maintain the garden our home’s previous owners left us with, to the early morning snow shoveling (I had to beg her to take a break when she was 89!), to the cards for our kids on every occasion not once forgotten, to so much more. The bible says Love Thy Neighbour; no truer words can be spoken. We love you Grandma Mary, we thank you for everything and we will miss you greatly. You will be remembered fondly forever and will continue to be inspired by you.

Dear Helen & Lilia, please accept out sincere condolences on the loss of your dear mother. What a gift it was to have her in your lives to such an amazing age. May your memories of happy times shared be of great comfort to you at this difficult time. May her memory be eternal! ВІЧНА ЇЙ ПАМ'ЯТЬ! Our mothers shared a long history. They were 'ОДНОСЕЛЬЧАНКИ' from the village of Ridkiw. They grew up together & attended school together & were taken from their village at age 16 to work in Germany on the farms. My Mama's name was Anna (Michalczuk) Kucyk. My father was John/Ivan Kucyk & my sister was Sonia (Kucyk) Skirko. As fate would have it, our parents shared many interesting memories back in the day. I have some lovely photos of your parents, even one of you, Helen, that I would like to gift you. Orysia

I am very sad about your loss. I did not know your sister Mrs. Maria Lozinski but reading her obituary left an impression of the struggles she faced as a young girl growing up and her sacrifices to support and help her family. She is a hero and we should all try to be as kind and caring as Maria was in her life.
