Obituary

SPOLSKY, Maria Anna (nee Ivanytska) March 1, 1916 November 23, 2004 . It is with great sadness and heartfelt sorow that we announce the passing of our mother, peacefully in her 89th year of life at the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Loving wife to the late Yaroslav (September, 1968), she will be missed by her children Yuri (Marusia), Christina (Tom Uzzell) and Myron (Rada), her grandchildren Stefan, Laryssa, Renata, Motria and Danylo, and her one great grandchild Christopher. Marika had a special relationship with and will be deeply missed by her sister Zonka in Toronto, her sister Eva (Bohdan) in Florida and her brother Ostap (Marika) in Lviv, Ukraine, along with many nieces and nephews, friends and acquaintances in Canada, the U.S. and Ukraine.

Our mother was very proud of her Ukrainian origins and heritage and passed this love on to her children and grandchildren. As her children reached adulthood, she became actively involved in several Ukrainian organizations as head of Plast Priyat (a Parent support group for the Ukrainian Scouting Organization Plast) and, until her retirement at age 80, as President of the Toronto Branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Social Services. Following Ukraine s independence in l991, she worked tirelessly to organize camps in Ukraine for children affected by the Chernobyl disaster, and to assist in the development of social service agencies in Ukraine. Special thanks to Olga and Dana, her caregivers extraordinaire, and to the Board,

management and staff at the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre.

All who knew her and her family are invited to pay their respects at Cardinal Funeral Home, 92 Annette Street on Thursday and Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Panakhyda on Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Queen and Bellwoods, on Saturday, November 27, 2004 at 10 a.m. followed by interment at Prospect Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Ukrainian Canadian Social Services or the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre will be greatly appreciated.
