Obituary
Nina Thomas, of Mississauga, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 12, 2025.
Born in Eastern Europe, then immigrating to Canada when she was young, Nina grew up with a deep love for the arts, history, fashion and seeing her children excel in life. Nina worked as a legal assistant in Toronto before moving to Sarnia. Nina became a member and president of the Sarnia branch of the Canadian Authors Association for many years and enjoyed writing freelance travel articles reflecting places she had been to. Nina especially loved reading, baking, sewing, travelling, gardening, Tchaikovsky, figure skating and ballet.
Nina lived a full and vibrant life witnessing nearly a century of change and progress. She exemplified wisdom, strength and unwavering love leaving behind a legacy that will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
Nina is survived by her children, Russell Thomas, Suzanne Maitland and Gregory Thomas; by her grandchildren, Justin Thomas, Kiersten Dermarkar (Bob), Nicholas Maitland, Christopher Maitland and Stephanie Maitland; great grandchildren, Daniel and Cecilia Thomas. She is also survived by her younger sister Rosemarie Nielsen. They will forever carry her memory in their hearts. Nina was preceded in death by her husband Russell Thomas, her son in law Timothy Maitland and her nephew Randolph Nielsen.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 20th at Cardinal Funeral Home on Bathurst in Toronto from 9-10:30 am. Funeral service will follow at 11am at Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church in Toronto with interment immediately following at York Cemetary. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to a charity of your choice in her memory.
