Obituary

Anna Lesia Bandera peacefully gave up her spirit at St. Joseph’s Hospital not long after the sun had set on Monday, August 15, 2011. Born in Germany, Lesia arrived to Canada with her widowed mother in 1960, when she enrolled at Humberside Collegiate Institute in Toronto. She later studied at the University of Toronto. Fluent in Ukrainian, German and English, Lesia worked as a translator, researcher and activist in various Ukrainian organizations, including the Ukrainian Youth Association of Canada (CYM) and the Ucrainica Research Institute. After decades of chronic illnesses, she is joining her father Stepan (1959), mother Yaroslava, nee Oparivska (1977), brother Andriy (1984) and sister Natalia Kucan (1985) in a far better place. She will be dearly missed by friends and family throughout Canada, including her wonderful caregivers and friends at St. Anne’s Place in Toronto, and family in the USA, Germany and Ukraine. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Ukrainian Canadian Social Services (Toronto) Inc., 2445 Bloor Street West, M6S 1P7 and LOFT Community Services (loftcs.org). May her memory be eternal!
