Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and great sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Adelaide Marcelino on April 24, 2023, aged 65. She was taken from us too soon, after a short battle with cancer, but died peacefully at home with her children all present.

Adelaide moved to Toronto from Lisbon at age 17 to build a new life. She was a beacon of strength, the matriarch and the heartbeat of our family. She will be forever loved by her children Daniel (Celia), Cristina (James) and Melissa (Chad), and as an adored Avó to her six grandchildren Penelope, Lillian, Michael, Adeline, James and Domenic.  Adelaide is also loved by her mother Idalina; sisters Lourdes and Benilde; her nieces and nephews in Canada and Portugal; by her friends; and by those families she worked for as a caregiver.

Adelaide will live on with every oldies song that is played, in every satisfying home cooked meal, and in every magnolia blossom. A visitation will be held at Cardinal Funeral Home at 366 Bathurst Street this Thursday, April 27 from 5pm to 8pm. A Church service will be held on Friday, April 28th at 9:45am at St. Mary’s Parish Catholic Church at 588 Adelaide St. To honour Adelaide’s memory, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Adelaide nurtured our family for 15 years; she started off as an employee and quickly became family. We all love her deeply and cherish the many fabulous memories we have of her. We can still hear her beautiful laugh. Our condolences to you and your family. Adelaide often spoke with such pride about her children and her six grandchildren.

It is with a very sad heart that I send mine and Adelino’s deepest condolences to Adelaide’s family, on her passing. She was a sunny and thoughtful lady who shared her heart, loved to laugh and delighted those around her with her recipes and spontaneous caring. She spread her love to all of us and made the world a better place where she was present. She will be dearly missed. Her love stays in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, her family, at this time of such sorrow. May she be lovingly embraced in God’s loving arms. Sending our love, Isabel Vieira and Adelino da Silva
