Obituary

We are sad to announce that Sue Kormendy, of Toronto, passed away on April 24, 2026, after five years of living with multiple myeloma. She was 73-years old. Sue was born on a farm near Blenheim, Ontario to Slovak immigrants, Sofia and Stefan Kormendy. She went to St Mary’s Catholic School and Blenheim District High School, before attending the University of Guelph and graduating with a BA. She got married in1977, but divorced in 1995. Her career was in interior design, working as a space planner and project manager in Ottawa and Toronto. Sue was a great daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She was always generous and cheerful, and maintained a positive outlook when facing life’s challenges. Sue loved gardening and playing tennis, and enjoyed serving on the boards of no less than three community tennis clubs. She also loved her friends, from those she had known since growing up in Blenheim to those she met at university and in Ottawa and Halifax, and those she came to know through work, tennis and living in Toronto – including her neighbours. Sue will be missed by all who knew her, especially by her sister and best friend, Anne Provart, and her brother Joe (Brenda). She will also be missed by her nieces and nephews (Denise, Jeannine, Michael, Nicholas, Philip, John, Catherine and Chris) and their children – who loved their “Aunt Sue” dearly. Sue is predeceased by her parents, her brother Michael and his wife Diana, and her brother-in-law Michael Provart. A celebration of life will be held at Cardinal Funeral Home on May 2, 2026. Thanks to the staff at Princess Margaret Hospital for their care during the course of Sue’s illness. Donations may be made to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

I met Sue, and Hans, at PMH during our stem cell transplant in February 2022; we were all high risks so needed a tandem transplant. We have stayed in touch via WhatsApp since and even met up for lunch once. Sue was always positive and refused to give up tennis! I remember she had to go to emerge from the courts and had some stitches - tennis gave her joy! 😊 Sadly both of us relapsed, Sue in early 2024 and me in August of the same year. She stayed with Michael Garron until later that year, then waiting to get into a trial at PMH. I was fortunate to be referred to PMH immediately and got into a trial in less than a month. Unfortunately Sue was ineligible for the trial and began receiving standard treatment from PMH. That said, all the pre-trial tests proved to be extremely challenging and Sue braved through the process with courage and perseverance. I saw Sue a few times when we happened to be at PMH on the same day and she remained cheerful and positive. I had the pleasure of meeting Lorraine, her wonderful neighbour who accompanied Sue on each and every one of the PMH visits. Sue's passing was a shock as we were in touch on WhatsApp (our last chat was on March 23) - there was no mention of any downturn in her treatment. You were a true fighter and a dear friend. Rest in peace Sue and my sincere condolences to your family. ❤️

Sue hired me at BGIS. She was the kind of leader everyone hopes to have - fair, supportive, approachable. Some of my best memories are of working alongside her. Sue led a great team and shared plenty of laughs along the way. Sue made us feel respected and appreciated and that's something you never forget. Even now, I still catch myself thinking about those days, the laughs we shared and how lucky we were to work with her. She leaves behind not only wonderful memories but a lasting impact on the people fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Sending my heartfelt condolences to Sue's family, friends and everyone whose lives she touched.

Before Interior Design, Sue had an interest in Landscape Architecture. I became fast friends with her at the BLA program at University of Guelph. Our class had our 50th reunion at Quadra Island last year, and like me they will all remember Sue with fondness. We were housemates for a spell in Guelph after graduation. Her smile and laughter always brightened the room. May her spirit soar on.

It is with great sorrow that I say adieu to my dear friend of 54 years Susanne Catherine Kormendy . Gone too early she valiantly fought against her disease and with little fanfare . Meeting at the University of Guelph we became fast friends and travelled to the East Coast together sleeping in a laundromat near Peggy's Cove, sharing Mooseheads at the Lord Nelson, finding "questionable lodgings" in a seedy part of Halifax, tenting across the region as first- time campers and enjoying a church supper in St. Ann's In PEI. We took the train home from Quebec City to Guelph and were penniless on arrival as we had pooled our last change to buy a chocolate bar. Throughout our adventures and all the years I knew her Sue was always bubbly and charming with a warm and friendly smile to everyone. She was " sunshine on a cloudy day.". She was also as beautiful as she was witty and wise. "I will always treasure our friendship. Rest in Peace, sweet Sue AKA Zoe!

I met Sue at university, around the same time I met my wife, Sue. We all became good friends. My Sue still reflects on her memorable summer trip with Sue to the East Coast. Both Sues and other university friends visited the family farm in Bruce County for music festivals or for cross country skiing on the rolling hills of Arran. Sue was always happy, warm and engaging. She was just like family. When I recently asked my siblings if they remembered Sue Kormendy, they replied "of course", and smiled, reflecting that ever-present smile we all remember of Sue. We will all miss her.

I haven’t seen Sue for many decades, but her warmth, interest in other people and in the world, and her grace—-all infuse all the memories I have of her. I think of her laugh, her quiet joys in many small and large things, and her intelligence. Her passing is a true loss, but she left the world a better place.

I first met Sue many years ago, when she was President of Don Mills Tennis Club. Then I reconnected with her at Parkway Valley TC. She was the same. A warm, gracious, cheerful presence in any gathering, and on court, possessing a mean backhand! She will be missed.

I have a photo stuck in my memory of Suzy and my sister wearing polkadot dresses, in the 1960s, which always made me think she was a go-go dancer! At family functions, there would always be smiles and laughter wherever Suzy was gathered. I will miss her wonderful spirit and infectious smile. With heartfelt condolences to family and friends, Cathy Podgorski & Rick Grenier and family "May her memories be a blessing."
