Obituary

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Sophia, our loving and devoted mother, on July 24, 2024, at the age of 98, Sophia passed peacefully with her daughter Mary and her caregiver Bernadette by her side.

Sophia is predeceased by her husband Walter. Survived and missed by children Mary (Stephen), Alice (Bob), Walter (Susan), her grandchildren Matthew (Lisa), Theresa (Charlie), her great-grandchildren Lucy, Raphael, Azelie, Benedict, Juliana.

Sophia will be fondly remembered for her great caring, integrity, sense of humor, resilience, and great courage in overcoming the overly harsh and unspeakable conditions of WWII when she was taken away from her home at age 14. After the war, Sophia immigrated to Montreal. Her innate talent for cooking and baking led her to develop a very successful catering service, primarily for Ukrainian weddings. Sophia’s sweet tables were legendary.

Sophia had a deep Faith, a zest for life, and loved singing which made her happy. Sophia also had a passion for gardening which relaxed and revitalized her. Sophia was lively, energetic, enjoyed being with people and improved the lives of everyone she met. Though she may no longer be with us in body, her spirit will live on in the memories we hold dear.

The family wish to thank Bernadette, her caregiver, and the doctors and nurses at St Joseph’s Hospital and then at Grace Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion and enabling Sophia to pass with dignity.
